Derwent Inktense 24 Pencils: Plan the Wash Before It Dries

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the 24-pencil tin for deliberate color placement followed by a fixed wash; choose another medium when rewetting dried layers is central to your work.

Best for
Adult sketchers and illustrators who want pencil placement before water-activated layering and will test the process on their chosen paper.
The trade-off
Permanence requires full dissolution and drying. Outliner behavior varies by revision; brush, water and suitable paper are separate supplies. Not recommended under age 14.

Article summary

Pencil placement followed by a water-activated wash gives Inktense a useful route into layered color. Choose the 24-pencil tin for that workflow, with drying time and version-specific Outliner behavior in mind.

A dry pencil mark and a wet wash ask for different decisions. You can place color carefully with a point, then bring water across the area to change its appearance. Derwent Inktense puts those two steps into a pencil format, with a further consequence: properly activated color becomes permanent after drying.

That is the reason to consider this 24-pencil tin for layered illustration or small studies. It is also the reason to pause if your favorite part of watercolor is repeatedly lifting and rearranging a dried wash. Decide whether fixing one layer before adding another helps the work you want to make.

Make the pencil point do a useful job

The selected 0700929 set contains 24 pencils in a tin, rather than Inktense blocks or paint pans. The pencils have round barrels and 4 mm cores. A point gives you a direct way to put color along a shape before deciding how widely to spread it with water.

Think of a leaf, a patterned object or a small illustrated label. You can choose where the initial color goes instead of beginning with a loaded brush alone. That is a practical reason to buy the pencil format, especially if drawing already feels more familiar than handling washes.

The tin keeps the assortment together, but it does not make a complete wet-painting kit. Allow for a brush, water and a suitable working surface. Pick paper intended for the amount of water you plan to use; an ordinary notebook is not automatically ready for repeated wet layers.

Treat drying as part of the layering method

Derwent describes Inktense as producing an ink-like wash, while its FAQ identifies the material as pigment based. The important buying distinction is how the layer behaves: the pigment must be fully dissolved with water and then allowed to dry for permanence.

That can help when you want a later wash over an earlier color without moving the dried layer beneath it. It also means the drying interval belongs in the process. Touching water to a few heavy pencil strokes is not a guarantee that every remaining mark has become fixed.

Make a small trial on the paper you intend to use. Try the same sequence of pencil, water, drying and another wash before committing to a finished illustration. A small sample lets you decide whether the color and timing suit the work.

If you want a wash that can readily be rewetted and changed, compare a traditional watercolor approach before choosing Inktense. Permanence is valuable when it serves the intended layer; it is less useful when it gets in the way of your preferred revision method.

Check the Outliner instead of trusting an older description

The manufacturer's listed assortment includes an Outliner alongside the colors. Its current FAQ says that pencil has been reformulated to be water soluble, while older sets can contain a non-water-soluble version. Check the marking on the pencil you receive before relying on its behavior.

That matters if you intend to outline a drawing and brush water across the lines. Do not buy this tin on an unconditional promise that every Outliner will resist the wash. A quick separate sample can establish which version you have without risking the main drawing.

The packaging artwork and painted pencil ends are also not calibrated swatches for your paper. Keep a small reference of your own wet and dry marks if matching colors matters. A ready assortment is a starting palette, not a substitute for learning how it looks in your process.

Keep the first projects manageable

Start with paper-based work if that is the job you already understand. Fabric is a separate project with its own preparation and care conditions, not a reason to assume any decorated item becomes machine washable.

This is also an adult art-material purchase: Derwent does not recommend Inktense for children under 14. Choose the tin when pointed color placement followed by a fixed wash gives a clear next step in your drawing. Skip it when reworking dried watercolor or assembling a complete all-in-one painting kit matters more.
