Logitech M185 vs G305: Choose the Controls Your Day Needs
Both use a USB receiver and a replaceable AA battery. The M185 keeps everyday pointing simple; the G305 adds programmable controls and adjustable tracking for a desk that also handles games.
Choose the M185 for familiar three-button pointing. Choose the G305 when thumb shortcuts, adjustable sensitivity and a saved control profile justify a more configurable mouse.

List the mouse actions you repeat before deciding that more buttons will improve your desk. If your day consists of clicking cells, selecting text and scrolling pages, the Logitech M185 supplies a familiar layout. The black Logitech G305 adds controls you can assign and tracking sensitivity you can change, which makes a stronger case when the same computer also runs games.
Both avoid a cord across the desk by using their own USB receiver. Both run on a replaceable AA battery. The meaningful choice is therefore how much control you want under your fingers, rather than simply whether the mouse is wireless.
Count the controls you will use
The M185 has left and right buttons plus a clickable scroll wheel. Its manual notes that the wheel's middle-button function depends on the application. That is enough for ordinary pointing and scrolling without building a custom layout.
Think through a real task. In a document, you might select a sentence, drag a scrollbar and click a toolbar. If those actions cover what you need, additional controls can remain a preference rather than a requirement. The M185's line-by-line wheel also keeps scrolling behavior straightforward.
The G305 offers six programmable buttons, including two on its left side and a sensitivity button behind the wheel. Its support documentation identifies G HUB as the software for advanced assignments. Browser navigation or a game command can move to a reachable button when the application and chosen assignment support it.
Extra buttons only earn their place when you use them reliably. Someone who often switches between pointer tasks and game controls has a concrete reason to configure the G305. Someone who prefers an unchanged, familiar arrangement may get more value from keeping the layout simple.
Logitech specifies the G305's HERO sensor from 200 to 12,000 DPI. The useful part is adjustable sensitivity: you can choose how far the pointer travels for a given movement instead of treating the maximum number as the setting everyone should use.
A higher setting is not proof of better aim or a more comfortable working day. Game preferences, screen arrangement, available desk space and your own movement all affect the choice. This comparison does not establish a measured accuracy or latency advantage between these two mice.
The G305 also supports one onboard hardware profile. That provides a place for a configured layout, but does not mean every software-dependent assignment becomes universal on every computer. Check current G HUB compatibility before buying specifically for advanced settings.
Shape still matters alongside the specifications. Logitech presents the M185 as compact and suitable for either hand. The G305's thumb controls sit on the left side, an arrangement worth noticing if you mouse with your left hand. A symmetrical outline alone does not make every control equally reachable.
Plan the port and battery routine
Neither selected version pairs directly over Bluetooth. Reserve a USB port for the supplied receiver. A USB-C-only laptop needs a suitable adapter or dock, so include that in the setup you intend to carry rather than discovering the mismatch after unpacking.
Both provide receiver storage inside the mouse. Use it when packing away the desk; a wireless mouse still depends on keeping that small connection component with it. Their replaceable AA power also means maintaining a spare cell rather than finding a charging cable.
Do not rank battery endurance by setting the M185's advertised months beside the G305's gaming hours. Those descriptions cover different operating assumptions. For either model, actual runtime depends on use and conditions; neither offers built-in USB charging.
Choose the M185 when a compact shell, basic controls and a receiver fit an ordinary workday. Choose the G305 when you can name the shortcuts or sensitivity adjustments you will use, and are willing to configure them. If Bluetooth or charging is essential, use that requirement to choose another model before debating these two.
