Sony MDR-7506 vs ATH-M20x: Choose the Cable for Your Desk

Sony's extending coil and folding frame suit one desk routine; Audio-Technica's three-meter straight, left-side lead suits another. Compare the cable route, analog output and storage before choosing either closed-back pair.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose MDR-7506 when coiled reach and folding storage are useful. Choose wired ATH-M20x when its straight three-meter cable suits a fixed listening station; both need a suitable analog output.

Two wired headphones can fit the same recording desk and still leave very different cables across it. The Sony MDR-7506 uses a coil that extends as you need more reach; the black Audio-Technica ATH-M20x has a three-meter straight lead. Start with where the headphone output sits, then decide which cable you want to manage.

Both are closed-back, over-ear headphones for analog listening and monitoring. Neither is a wireless microphone headset. The useful comparison is how one pair fits your working position and storage routine, rather than which manufacturer's studio description sounds more impressive.

Follow the cable from the output to your chair

Sony's operating instructions list approximately 1.2 meters of coiled cable, extending to about three meters. That makes sense when the output is beside the workstation and your listening position changes within a limited area. Some length stays gathered in the coil instead of lying straight across the desk.

That does not mean the cable disappears. Leave enough freedom for the position in which you actually sit; do not buy on the assumption that routinely stretching it to its maximum is the same as having a relaxed three-meter straight lead.

The M20x's cable is three meters, straight, and exits from the left earcup. It suits a route where you can deliberately place the lead between the listener and an interface, keyboard or other headphone output. Any length you do not need still has to go somewhere.

Picture the actual route around the chair and desk edge. Choose Sony if the gathered coil suits that route; choose Audio-Technica if a long straight run is easier to arrange. Neither is a sensible purchase for someone whose main requirement is walking around without a cable.

Check the socket before comparing the earcups

Both models connect through a 3.5 mm stereo plug, with a larger 6.3 mm adapter supplied for compatible equipment. Sony describes its Unimatch arrangement; Audio-Technica specifies a snap-on adapter in the current US package.

Those adapters change the physical plug size. They do not turn an analog headphone into a USB device, add a microphone or supply a missing audio output. A computer or phone without a suitable headphone socket needs another compatible audio connection.

If you already record through an interface, check its headphone output. If the goal is speaking in calls, identify the microphone separately. These two pairs make sense when you want to hear playback and have already planned how your voice will be captured.

Both have attached cables. Choose another model if unplugging the lead at the earcup for storage or straightforward cable replacement is a deciding requirement.

Separate fit from a specification ranking

Sony's current instructions give approximately 230 grams without the cable. Audio-Technica lists 190 grams without cable and connector. Those exclusions matter: neither figure describes the entire bundle of headphone and lead that you put into a bag.

The lower listed headphone weight is a reason to investigate fit, not proof that the M20x will be comfortable for every wearer. Headband pressure, cushion contact, glasses and session length remain personal considerations.

Both use closed earcups, and neither provides active noise cancellation. That structure does not establish identical isolation, complete silence or zero sound reaching a nearby microphone. Check the listening level and actual room arrangement rather than expecting the word “monitor” to guarantee a result.

This comparison includes no matched listening, isolation or comfort test. Frequency-range and impedance figures alone cannot settle which sound you prefer or predict the result with every output device.

Decide how the session ends

Sony folds inward and supplies a carrying pouch. Those are concrete reasons to consider it when the desk must be cleared after recording or the pair travels between workstations. Its manual still warns against prolonged pressure during storage; a soft pouch is not a rigid protective case.

The M20x's straight cable also needs a deliberate storage place. Its manual advises against winding the lead around a portable audio device and describes pads as parts that deteriorate with use and storage.

Choose the MDR-7506 for a useful coiled reach and folding storage arrangement. Choose the wired ATH-M20x when the straight three-meter, left-side cable suits a more fixed station. Keep a working pair that already fits: a better cable route is a concrete upgrade, while an unsupported promise of better mixes is not.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01Sony MDR-7506 — Black, standard single pair (US)

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Choose gathered coiled reach when it fits the route between the output and your seat.
  • Fold the pair and use the supplied pouch when clearing the desk or moving between workstations.
THE LIMITS
  • The attached cable still needs space, including when the headphones are folded.
  • No active noise cancellation or microphone; a suitable analog output is required.
  • A soft pouch is not a rigid protective case, and personal fit still matters.

02Audio-Technica ATH-M20x — Black wired closed-back headphones, fixed left-side cable

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Route a long straight cable deliberately to a fixed analog listening station.
  • Connect to suitable small or large headphone sockets using the supplied US adapter.
THE LIMITS
  • The attached straight cable needs slack management and cannot be unplugged at the earcup.
  • This wired model has no active noise cancellation, wireless mode or microphone.
  • The listed weight does not guarantee personal comfort or superior sound.
