STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph 12 Pencils: Choose a Grade for the Mark

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the 100 G12 tin for an organized 6B–4H graphite range you will explore in drawings; a single familiar grade can be enough for routine writing.

Best for
Sketchers making object, texture or tonal studies who want to compare graphite grades and keep them together between sessions.
The trade-off
This is the 6B–4H twelve-grade tin, not the whole Lumograph range. Graphite has a metallic lustre; sharpening and separate paper, eraser and sharpener remain part of the setup.

If every part of a pencil sketch is asking the same HB pencil to do a different job, an assorted set can be a useful next purchase. The STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph 100 G12 tin gives you twelve graphite grades to choose from, so a light construction line and a dark area do not have to begin with the same pencil.

The selected set runs from 6B to 4H. It includes B, HB and F between its softer and harder choices, rather than twelve identical writing pencils. Its purchase case is the range you can put beside a drawing, not a promise that a larger collection automatically produces a better picture.

Lay out grades around the drawing you make

The exact twelve grades are 6B, 5B, 4B, 3B, 2B, B, HB, F, H, 2H, 3H and 4H. The markings on the photographed pencils and the tin identify the assortment. STAEDTLER offers a wider Lumograph range, but the full range is not what arrives in this twelve-piece set.

That selection lets you explore softer B grades for shaded areas and harder H grades for more restrained lines. Start with a small group rather than switching through all twelve just because they are available. For a simple object study, choose one pencil for the initial shape and a softer option for the darker areas, then add another grade when the drawing needs it.

Keep a strip of sample marks on the paper you actually use. A label tells you which grade you picked; the sample helps you decide whether the resulting mark belongs in this drawing. You are buying more choices, not twelve mandatory stages to work through.

Choose graphite's appearance deliberately

STAEDTLER describes the ordinary Lumograph 100 graphite as having a subtle metallic lustre. That belongs in the decision if you want a graphite drawing's particular appearance. Do not assume the darkest part of a sketch will have the same finish as a matte black ink or carbon drawing material.

The point can make a contour, while a broader contact area can be used when working across a larger shape. Sharpening and how you hold the pencil therefore remain part of the process. A hardness grade is not a fixed line-width setting.

Consider the surface you usually draw on and the kind of marks you enjoy making. This tin is a sensible choice for exploring graphite tone and line on paper. It is less convincing if the real goal is a consistent mechanical-pencil diameter, a colored palette or a water-activated wash.

Keep the useful grades easy to find

The metal tin holds the pencils together and displays their grade markings when opened. That is the second practical buying reason: you can see the assortment as a set instead of searching through loose pencils for the one you used a moment ago.

Put the pencils back in a consistent order as you work. If a few grades become favorites, their positions make returning to them straightforward. The case is especially useful when the same sketching supplies move between a table and a shelf; you do not have to rebuild the selection each time.

The package is a pencil assortment, so plan separately for paper, a sharpener and an eraser. STAEDTLER lists recommended sharpening and erasing accessories on its product page, rather than promising that those supplies are included in this tin.

Buy variety when it has a job

The manufacturer describes the bonded lead as resistant to breaking during sharpening and use. Treat that as a construction feature, not permission to drop the pencils or force a damaged point through a sharpener. A metal storage case is still worth putting away carefully.

For someone who mostly writes shopping lists with one familiar grade, the assortment may add more sorting than useful choice. For someone already drawing objects, textures or tonal studies, it offers a contained way to compare marks without buying twelve grades one at a time.

Choose the 100 G12 when you want to learn which graphite grades serve your drawings and will keep the selection organized. Confirm the 6B–4H markings when ordering: another twelve-pencil assortment can cover a different range.
