FIFINE K688: Choose USB Controls or an XLR Signal Path

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the original K688 when you want close-positioned USB voice recording with local gain and mute controls, plus a separate XLR route you understand.

Best for
A solo computer speaker who wants controls on the microphone and can provide a suitable stand or boom arm for close placement.
The trade-off
The original mic pack has no stand or XLR cable. Local function controls are for USB; XLR-only recording needs external controls. It cannot silence a room.

Article summary

A physical gain knob, headphone listening and tap mute make the K688 useful at a computer desk. Its XLR socket offers another route, but those local controls are USB features.

A mute button within reach is a good reason to choose a desk microphone—provided it works with the connection you plan to use. The FIFINE K688 puts tap mute, microphone gain and headphone volume on its body. The important detail is that these are USB features, not a promise that an XLR-only setup keeps the same controls.

This is the original black AmpliTank K688 with the round shock mount, rather than a stand bundle or K688Neo. It suits a computer speaking setup where physical adjustment matters. Before buying, decide how it will connect and what will hold it near your mouth.

Put the useful controls in reach

Over USB, the K688 connects to a Windows or Mac computer with the included cable. Its microphone gain knob provides an adjustment on the device itself. The separate headphone volume knob changes listening level; the two controls do different jobs.

That distinction is useful during a recording check. If the captured voice is too loud, examine microphone gain and the application's input meter. If the headphones are simply uncomfortable to listen to, adjust listening volume. Turning down the headphones does not by itself fix an overloaded recording.

The 3.5 mm headphone socket provides direct monitoring, and the tap control offers a local mute. Make checking the selected input and recording a short sample part of setup. A convenient button does not establish which device a meeting or recording application has selected.

Plan the XLR route separately

The XLR output connects to a suitable audio interface or mixer. It is a reason to keep this microphone in consideration if you already have that equipment or can explain why you will need it.

It is not a complete XLR recording system in the box. The selected microphone pack does not include an XLR cable, interface or mixer. Add those costs and the stand to the decision before comparing its price with a ready-to-use desktop kit.

FIFINE's FAQ identifies the function keys, including gain and mute, as USB controls. For an XLR-only connection, plan to use the relevant interface or mixer controls. Do not buy on the assumption that tapping the microphone will mute every possible signal path. This is a practical difference between two ways of connecting the same body.

Give the speaking end a place to work

The K688 is an end-address cardioid dynamic microphone. Speak toward the end under the foam windscreen, not toward the logo on its side. FIFINE recommends a close position of about two to six inches; its setup article also suggests a slight angle to manage breath bursts.

That advice makes stand placement important. Can an arm reach your speaking position without sitting across the screen? Will a desk stand bring the microphone close enough without forcing you to lean? Work out the position before treating the microphone alone as the whole purchase.

The included shock mount separates the body from its support through a suspension. It addresses vibration transmitted through the support; it does not remove all keyboard sounds, other voices or room reflections. The windscreen and directional pickup are not replacements for a workable location.

Check the pack rather than the photograph's setting

The exact pack lists the microphone with shock mount, USB cable, mounting adapter and user guide. A boom arm, desk stand and XLR cable are separate. Photos of a finished streaming desk can show accessories that are not supplied.

Also note that FIFINE says the K688 does not support its Genie software. Choose it for the documented physical controls and connection options, rather than expecting that software to add another set of features.

Buy the K688 when its USB controls solve an everyday recording problem and you can give it a close, stable position. Keep XLR as a separate equipment decision. If you need an included stand or universal on-body mute across an XLR chain, choose around those requirements before ordering.
