Logitech M650 L vs Kensington Orbit: Choose Your Document Controls

SmartWheel and thumb shortcuts meet a stationary ball and scroll ring. Choose one pointing device around desk movement, connection and the controls your computer can use.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose the M650 L for a larger right-handed mouse with adaptable scrolling and thumb controls; choose the wired Orbit for stationary finger pointing and a separate scroll ring, accepting its learning curve.

Back, scroll, select, repeat: a day spent reviewing documents can make the controls under your fingers more important than the sensor number on a box. The Logitech Signature M650 L and wired Kensington Orbit K72337US both handle everyday pointing, but they divide that work differently. Start with the actions you repeat, then decide which device deserves the space beside your keyboard.

Here the choices are the black right-handed M650 L and black wired Orbit with Scroll Ring. They are alternatives for one computer-navigation purchase. The useful distinction is whether you want thumb shortcuts and variable wheel scrolling within a familiar mouse, or finger-operated pointing with a separate ring.

Put your repeated document actions first

Take a browser session with several reference pages. The M650 L puts back and forward on two thumb buttons, so those actions have dedicated physical controls. Logitech also documents a horizontal-scroll combination: hold a side button while turning the wheel. That is a specific reason to consider it for wide spreadsheets alongside ordinary page navigation.

Its SmartWheel changes behavior with how you turn it. Slow movement gives stepped scrolling; a faster flick produces lower-friction speed scrolling. If you alternate between reading a short list carefully and moving past many pages, that change can be more relevant than a long list of programmable commands.

The Orbit asks your fingers to divide the jobs differently. Its ball moves the pointer, while the ring around it moves vertically through a page. You can keep the device in one location as you switch between those actions. Two physical buttons provide the clicking controls.

Consider a task you do dozens of times. If dedicated browser shortcuts or the M650's horizontal-scroll combination are requirements, the Orbit's simpler hardware is a meaningful limitation. If independently operating a ball and scroll ring appeals to you, those two controls are the reason to consider the Orbit rather than dismiss it by button count.

Separate useful hardware from optional software

Custom assignments can extend both products, but they should not be the foundation of a purchase until you check the computer. Logitech's support material describes changing M650 side-button functions with Options+. Kensington describes button and speed customization for the Orbit, subject to platform limits.

The Orbit's exact support page lists Chrome OS, macOS and Windows for the hardware. Its product page makes a narrower distinction for software: ChromeOS receives basic trackball functions without the stated customization, and Windows-on-ARM computers are flagged as unsupported by that software.

That matters on a work laptop where installing an application may need approval. Make a short list of controls you need without additional software, then check the operating-system and software requirements for anything beyond them. Do not treat basic pointer compatibility as proof that every custom assignment will work.

Connection belongs on the same list. The M650 L offers Bluetooth Low Energy or a Logi Bolt USB receiver and uses one replaceable AA. The selected Orbit uses wired USB and needs no batteries. Check actual ports and suitable adapters before buying for a USB-C-only computer. Neither a wireless receiver nor a cable arrangement is automatically simpler for every desk.

Let the physical fit confirm the decision

Logitech recommends the M650 L for large hands. This right-handed version is distinct from both the standard-size M650 and the separate M650 L Left. Compare its size and thumb-button reach with a mouse you already find comfortable; the larger model is not automatically the right upgrade for a smaller hand.

The Orbit has a symmetrical body and finger-operated ball. Because the body stays put, it does not need a mouse's sliding path, although you must still reserve enough room to place it. Expect practice with precise selections and dragging if a trackball is new to you. Neither product guarantees comfort or relief from discomfort.

Buy the M650 L when the larger grip fits and its wheel-plus-thumb controls answer your repeated tasks. Buy the Orbit when fixed-position finger pointing and ring scrolling are worth accepting wired two-button operation and a new movement habit. Choose the useful control first, then make sure your computer and hand can use it.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01Logitech Signature M650 L — Full Size / Large Sized / Black

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Choose a larger shell while retaining familiar mouse movement.
  • Use adaptable scrolling and dedicated thumb navigation controls.
THE LIMITS
  • Requires surface movement and one replaceable AA battery; this is the right-handed L version, not the separate Left version.

02Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring / K72337US — Black wired USB

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Move the pointer without sliding the whole device around the desk.
  • Use a separate scrolling ring and wired power without battery management.
THE LIMITS
  • Needs a USB connection and cable space; two physical buttons and unfamiliar trackball movement may limit fit. Check platform-specific customization.
