Logitech M185 vs Kensington Orbit K72337US: Move the Mouse or Roll the Ball?
The M185 keeps familiar mouse motion and AA-powered wireless; the wired Orbit stays still and separates ball movement from ring scrolling. Desk space, physical controls and software limits decide the fit.
Choose M185 for familiar controls and compact wireless travel with room to move; choose Orbit K72337US for stationary pointing and a separate scroll ring when wired two-button operation and adaptation fit.

A notebook and a mug can leave a laptop desk with enough room to rest a hand, but little room to sweep a mouse. The Logitech M185 and wired Kensington Orbit K72337US solve the same everyday pointing job in different ways. The M185 moves across the desk; the Orbit stays in place while your fingers roll its ball.
That difference matters more than calling either one ergonomic. Both can select text, drag files and scroll through a document. Choose around the space and motion available in your actual setup, then check the connection and controls before deciding.
Decide whether the device can move on your desk
The M185 is a compact, symmetrical mouse intended for either hand. Logitech describes a contoured body suitable for packing with a laptop. Its small shell makes it easy to carry, but pointer travel still requires clear surface around the device. A notebook pressed against one side can interrupt an otherwise familiar movement.
The Orbit changes that requirement. A 40 mm finger-operated ball controls the pointer while the body remains stationary, and the shell is also ambidextrous. That makes it a plausible alternative on a narrow keyboard tray or crowded workstation: reserve a resting place for the trackball rather than a sweeping area.
Stationary does not mean tiny or automatically comfortable. The Orbit's body and optional wrist-rest position still need room, and finger movement takes practice. Neither a symmetrical shape nor a fixed body guarantees relief from strain. Compare how your hand rests and reaches the controls; avoid buying on a promised health benefit.

Match scrolling and clicking to your routine
The M185 uses left and right buttons plus a clickable wheel, for three controls. Logitech specifies line-by-line scrolling. That is a familiar arrangement for browsing, document work and ordinary spreadsheet navigation, especially if moving between machines should involve little adjustment.
The Orbit separates pointer movement from scrolling. Fingers roll the ball to move the cursor, then turn the ring surrounding it to travel up or down a page. Its two physical buttons handle ordinary clicking. KensingtonWorks can assign button functions and adjust pointer and scroll speed on supported systems, but extra software cannot add dedicated physical shortcut buttons.
Think about a repeated task rather than a specification alone. If clicking the wheel is part of your workflow, the M185's hardware arrangement is the straightforward choice. If a separate scrolling ring and a fixed pointing location solve your desk problem, the Orbit offers a distinct reason to learn a new motion. Neither is the obvious answer for someone who needs many dedicated browser or application shortcuts.
The selected M185 connects through its included USB-A receiver using 2.4 GHz wireless; it does not pair directly over Bluetooth. One AA battery powers it. Logitech advertises up to twelve months, with actual life dependent on use and computing conditions. That keeps a cable off the working area, while leaving a receiver to protect and a battery to replace.
The selected Orbit is wired USB, so it requires neither wireless pairing nor batteries. The tradeoff is a cable running to the computer or hub. A stationary desk may accommodate that easily, while frequent packing makes cable management another step.
A USB-C-only laptop needs a suitable connection arrangement for either selected device. Check the available ports with your normal accessories attached. For the M185, allow for the receiver; for the Orbit, allow for its USB lead. Neither purchase should rest on assuming a different wireless or Bluetooth variant is included.

Choose familiarity or a fixed pointing area
Logitech lists M185 compatibility with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Linux. Kensington's exact support material lists the wired Orbit with Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, but customization has narrower limits: ChromeOS provides basic HID functions without KensingtonWorks customization, and the current software excludes Windows ARM computers. Confirm current requirements if button assignments are part of the purchase.
The Orbit also introduces a maintenance and learning decision. Finger-controlled selections and dragging feel different from moving a mouse, so give sensitivity settings attention. Its guide describes removing the ball from underneath and cleaning it with a dry cloth when troubleshooting.
Choose the M185 when familiar controls, a compact travel body and a wireless desk surface matter, and you have room to move it. Choose the Orbit K72337US when a stationary pointing area and separate scroll ring answer a recurring desk-space problem, and wired two-button operation plus a trackball adjustment period are acceptable.
