AeroPress Original vs Bodum CHAMBORD: Paper Filters or Metal Mesh?

Choose between the Original's included paper filters and ejectable grounds, and the CHAMBORD's reusable metal filter, washable assembly and documented replacement parts.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose the AeroPress Original for its included paper-filter routine and puck ejection. Choose the Bodum CHAMBORD 1928-16US4 for reusable metal filtration if you will clean the assembly and care for its glass beaker.

Buying a manual coffee brewer also means choosing what you will keep beside it: a supply of paper discs, or a reusable filter assembly that needs cleaning after each brew. The AeroPress Original and Bodum CHAMBORD offer those two routines. That is a useful starting point when you already know how much coffee you need and want to decide which filter system you will maintain.

This comparison covers the gray, 10-ounce AeroPress Original and the chrome Bodum CHAMBORD 1928-16US4, rated at 34 ounces or one liter. Choose the Original for its included paper-filter routine and the way its plunger ejects used grounds. Choose the CHAMBORD if avoiding routine paper-filter purchases matters to you and you are comfortable washing a reusable filter assembly.

Decide what you want the filter to keep back

The Original places a Standard paper micro-filter inside its removable filter cap. AeroPress explains that its paper filters retain oils that its own reusable metal filter allows through. That gives paper a concrete role beyond holding the grounds: it is a deliberate filtration choice. If you already prefer paper-filtered coffee, the Original lets you keep that preference in a manual press.[1][2][4]

The CHAMBORD instead uses a reusable stainless-steel filter assembly. Bodum's normal brewing instructions require no paper filter, so you can prepare another brew without drawing from a stack of disposable discs.[3] This is its clearest buying reason for someone who dislikes keeping a dedicated coffee consumable stocked. Reusability does not mean the metal screen cleans itself.

The filter choice is also less permanent than the two standard setups suggest. AeroPress sells a Standard stainless-steel filter compatible with the Original.[2] If you already own an Original and simply want to stop using paper, consider that accessory before buying another brewer. A change of filter does not make the Original's chamber, plunger or cleaning procedure identical to the CHAMBORD.

Follow the grounds after brewing

AeroPress's instructions separate grounds removal from filter removal: take off the cap, push the plunger to eject the used grounds, and remove the used paper filter from the cap. Then rinse the cap and brewer.[4] The useful benefit is how the grounds are gathered for removal: you can eject a puck rather than scoop loose grounds out of a carafe.

That convenience still leaves maintenance. AeroPress recommends occasionally taking the silicone seal off the plunger and washing its inner and outer surfaces with warm water and dish soap. The Original can also go on the dishwasher's top rack.[5] Buy it because you like this sequence, rather than assuming that pushing out the grounds eliminates every cleaning task.

On the CHAMBORD, the grounds stay in the glass beaker beneath the lowered filter. Bodum's supplied French-press instructions call for unscrewing the filter assembly and cleaning the plunger unit after every use; they permit dishwashing the filter, glass, plastic and chrome parts.[6] Removing paper from the routine therefore shifts attention to cleaning and reassembling the reusable components. Choose it if that trade suits your kitchen habits.

Check the parts you would keep and replace

Bodum lists a replacement glass beaker, filter plate, cross plate and spiral plate alongside this exact CHAMBORD model. The 1508-10 beaker is the 34-ounce, one-liter replacement; the listed 01-1508-16-612 filter plate includes the one-liter size in its compatibility description.[3][7][8] For a buyer who wants to maintain the brewer, identifiable individual parts are a second reason to consider it.

Those listings provide a way to check compatibility, not a promise that every part will always be available. The CHAMBORD's borosilicate-glass beaker is still breakable; Bodum instructs owners to stop using damaged glass and replace it before brewing again.[6] AeroPress also sells replacement seals, so replaceable parts are not exclusive to Bodum.[1] Look at which parts you expect to clean, inspect and eventually replace.

Capacity remains a practical limit even when filtration drives the choice. The Original's rated capacity is 10 ounces; this CHAMBORD is 34 ounces, and Bodum's “eight cups” refers to small manufacturer-defined servings, not eight large mugs.[1][3] Both require separately heated water and manual operation. AeroPress also needs a suitable, sturdy receiving vessel; follow its normal upright instructions and press gently.[4][5]

Choose the AeroPress Original when you want the included paper-filter setup, are willing to replenish Standard filters, and prefer ejecting the used grounds before rinsing. Its gray polypropylene body and removable silicone seal suit that routine, but the smaller chamber still has to meet your serving needs.[1][5]

Choose the CHAMBORD when a reusable metal filter is the priority and you are comfortable washing its assembly and caring for a glass beaker. Its documented replacement components make maintenance easier to plan. If the filter and cleanup routine you already own works well, neither brewer creates a reason to replace it.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01AeroPress Original — Gray, Standard (10 oz), US

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The included paper micro-filter setup suits a reader who deliberately wants paper filtration and accepts replenishing Standard filters.
  • Ejecting the spent grounds as a puck suits a reader who prefers that removal step before rinsing, while retaining occasional seal cleaning.
THE LIMITS
  • The selected standard workflow uses replenishable paper filters; a compatible reusable metal filter is a separately sold option.
  • The chamber is rated at 10 oz and needs a suitable sturdy receiving vessel plus separately heated water.
  • Puck ejection does not eliminate rinsing or occasional seal cleaning.
  • The reused 2021 photograph shows an earlier red-lettered Original; its funnel is not included in the current standard kit, and paper filters are not pictured.

02Bodum CHAMBORD 1928-16US4 — Chrome / Polished Stainless Steel / 34 oz / 1.0 L

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Reusable metal filtration suits a reader who wants the normal brewing setup to work without restocking paper filters and will wash the assembly after use.
  • Specific compatible replacement-part listings let an owner plan component maintenance without assuming a damaged beaker or filter always requires buying another complete brewer.
THE LIMITS
  • The glass beaker is breakable and should be replaced before reuse if damaged.
  • Avoiding paper does not avoid cleaning: the filter assembly must be unscrewed and the plunger unit cleaned after use.
  • Current replacement-part listings do not guarantee stock, price, universal compatibility or future supply.
  • The eight-cup designation is based on small manufacturer-defined servings, not eight large mugs; manual operation and separately heated water are still required.
