A faster router can still leave a wired connection with the same limit it had before. With the ASUS RT-BE58U, the first buying decision is how to use its single 2.5G Ethernet port. The answer depends on the modem or gateway, the internet plan and the devices on the other end of your cables. Sketch that path before treating the WiFi generation as the whole upgrade.

Give each wired connection a job

ASUS lists one 2.5G WAN/LAN port, one 1G WAN/LAN port and three 1G LAN ports. Write down which socket will connect to your internet equipment and which devices need local wired connections. Include a desktop computer, storage device or existing switch if any of those are part of the household setup.

If you intend to use the 2.5G port for the internet connection, account for the remaining wired ports being Gigabit. A computer attached to one of those ports does not receive a 2.5G wired link just because the router has a faster socket elsewhere. Conversely, reserving the faster port for a local device affects how you connect the internet side.

This small diagram also exposes missing equipment. Check the negotiated link speed on the computer after installation and keep the cable path simple while testing. When a result disappoints, knowing every link in the chain makes it easier to identify what actually needs attention.

Check what dual-band means for your devices

The RT-BE58U operates on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. It is a dual-band WiFi 7 router, so a purchase specifically intended to add a 6 GHz network needs a different specification. Read the wireless capabilities of the devices you plan to keep using, especially the work laptop that carries your most important calls.

ASUS presents multi-link operation in its product material, with client support determining the usable modes. Treat it as a compatibility item to verify on each relevant device. Installing the router does not change an older laptop's radio hardware, and a large number on a product page is not a measured download result for your home.

Make a short list of where wireless performance matters. A desk upstairs, the television corner and the kitchen may present very different conditions. Keep the same device and task for checks in those locations, so a change in phone or application does not muddy the comparison.

Plan placement before adding more hardware

Find an accessible position for the router with room for its antennas, power cable and network connections. A location chosen only because the old cable reaches it may be a poor starting point for your actual rooms. If repositioning is possible, try that before deciding how many additional devices the network needs.

The model supports ASUS AiMesh as a router or node. That provides a route to consider for a larger setup, but the word mesh does not specify where a second unit belongs in your particular home. Plan the connection between units as carefully as the connection to a client.

Start with the places that matter most and record the result of an ordinary task. A completed video call or a stable file transfer answers a more useful question than a signal icon alone. Leave a short note about the router location so future comparisons use the same starting conditions.

Buy for the network you can describe

The RT-BE58U is a plausible fit when dual-band wireless and one faster Ethernet port match the plan. It is less convincing if your priority requires several multi-gigabit wired links or specifically calls for 6 GHz. Put those requirements in writing before ordering.

After setup, confirm that your regular devices reconnect and that the selected operating mode fits the existing gateway arrangement. Save the configuration through the supported interface once the setup works. The most valuable upgrade is a network whose connections and limits you understand well enough to maintain.
