Brother VC-500W: Price the Label Roll Before the Color Printer
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose it after budgeting the exact printable roll and designing a representative label at full size.
Best for
Craft desks and small businesses making short, personalized color-label runs with a known roll size.
The trade-off
Specialized printable rolls remain an expense; cleaning stock is not printable; software and output size need checking.

Brother Brother ColAura VC-500W
VC500W white/black color photo and label printer, standard single printer package
A colorful sticker can make a small package feel personal, but a label printer is only economical if you understand what each finished label consumes. The Brother ColAura VC-500W is interesting for occasional photo labels, gift packaging and short custom runs. Its ink-free description should prompt a question about the roll, not an assumption that color printing has no ongoing cost.
The printer uses ZINK media rather than separate ink cartridges, toner or ribbons. That changes the supply you buy; it does not eliminate supplies. Before choosing the machine, work out the width and length of the label you actually need, then look at the corresponding printable roll.
Start with one real label
Create a sample design with the longest name, address or message you expect to use. View it at the intended physical size. Text that looks comfortable across a laptop screen can become too small when placed on a narrow label.
Leave room for margins and the way the label will sit on the object. A curved jar, a folded gift tag and a flat folder do not provide the same usable surface. If a design needs a large photograph and several lines of text, simplifying the layout may matter more than adding decorative elements. The printer's color capability does not rescue an overcrowded design.

Separate printing supplies from cleaning supplies
Brother lists a 25mm CZ-1004 printable roll and a 50mm CK-1000 cleaning cassette in the standard package. The cleaning cassette is not an extra wide roll for making labels. That distinction matters when calculating how much usable stock comes with the printer.
Check the exact package contents of the offer, especially when a seller advertises a bundle. Additional rolls should be identified by type and width rather than counted as generic accessories. If you need a different printable width from the included roll, include that purchase in the initial budget instead of discovering the mismatch after setup.
Estimate the cost of a useful batch
A practical estimate begins with roll length divided by the length of one finished label, allowing for waste and trial prints. Then divide the roll price by a realistic number of usable labels. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed yield: design changes and rejected prints can alter the result.
For a small craft project, convenience and customization may justify the consumable cost. For hundreds of identical labels, compare outsourcing or another printing method. The VC-500W makes more sense when the ability to change a name, image or message in a short run is valuable to you.
Check the software on your actual device
Brother offers Color Label Editor 2 for mobile design and P-touch Editor for computers. Confirm current compatibility for the operating system you use, along with the connection requirements. An older operating-system list on a retailer page is not proof that every current device is supported.
Before a time-sensitive project, prepare a small sample and check the entire path from editing to output. Make sure the selected printer, roll size and orientation match the design. Keep a reusable template once the result is right. These are recommended setup checks, not a claim that this article tested the printer.
Choose it for personalization
The strongest buyer is someone producing modest quantities of customized color labels and willing to manage the correct rolls. Keeping a repeatable template and a spare printable roll can be more useful than collecting many designs that never reach the printer.
Skip it if your main job requires large shipping labels, substantial production volume, or an unverified special-surface application. A colorful output sample is not evidence of suitability for every adhesive task.
Buy the VC-500W when a specific label design, compatible software and acceptable per-label cost line up. The useful feature is convenient personalization within the roll format, not the absence of an ink cartridge by itself.
