CHEMEX CM-6A vs HARIO V60 Plastic 02 Pour-Over Coffee Makers: Batch or Cup-by-Cup Control?

Both are manual paper-filter brewers, but the 30-ounce CHEMEX CM-6A combines brewing and serving for a shared batch, while the light HARIO V60 Plastic 02 sits on a mug or server and gives you more flexible one-to-four-cup setup choices.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose the CHEMEX CM-6A when one attended pour-over batch for two or three people and an integrated serving vessel solve the real problem. Choose the HARIO V60 Plastic 02 when a light, compact dripper for one mug or a small server matters more than an all-in-one glass carafe. Both need paper filters, a kettle, and repeatable pouring; neither is a hands-off coffee machine.

The CHEMEX Classic 6-Cup CM-6A and clear HARIO V60 Plastic Coffee Dripper 02 are realistic substitutes for the same purchase: a manual paper-filter brewer for clean, hands-on coffee without an electric machine. Both use a conical coffee bed, gravity, and a controlled pour. Both ask you to supply hot water, ground coffee, and the correct paper filter. The decision is therefore less about whether you want pour-over and more about how much coffee you make, what you want to serve from, and how much equipment you want on the counter.

The CHEMEX turns the brewer and carafe into one 30-ounce glass vessel. The HARIO is a light Size 02 dripper that sits on a mug or separate server and is rated for one to four cups. That difference changes the whole routine: shared batch and table service on one side, compact storage and flexible receiving vessels on the other.

Start with the shared pour-over workflow

Neither product automates the brew. You wet the paper, add coffee, bloom the grounds, and continue pouring while water passes through the bed. A kettle with a controlled spout, a consistent grind, and repeatable amounts make either brewer easier to use. Paper filters are consumables, and neither selected package should be treated as a complete grinder-and-kettle starter kit.

The shared benefits are direct. Pouring by hand lets you adjust flow and total water for the recipe instead of accepting a fixed machine cycle. Cleanup is also simple compared with a brewer that has a tank, valve, or warming system: remove the paper and grounds, then wash or rinse the brewing surface. The tradeoff is attention. If breakfast requires pressing a button and walking away, both of these products solve the wrong problem.

The filter systems are not interchangeable. The CM-6A uses compatible CHEMEX Bonded filters, including the FS-100 pre-folded square, while the HARIO uses V60 Size 02 papers. Choose the brewer before stocking filters, and treat ongoing paper availability as part of the purchase.

Choose the CHEMEX CM-6A for a batch and built-in server

CHEMEX lists the CM-6A at 30 ounces and defines each named cup as five ounces. In practical terms, that is enough for three 10-ounce servings rather than six large mugs. Its first buying benefit is capacity: one attended pour can cover a modest breakfast table. Its second is integration: coffee drains into the same borosilicate-glass body you carry to the table, so there is no separate dripper to lift from a mug before serving.

The wood collar and leather tie give you a grip around the narrow waist, and the brewer can make less than its maximum capacity when the group is smaller. The official method calls for medium-coarse coffee, a short bloom, and continued circular or back-and-forth pouring. CHEMEX also instructs users to place the three-layer side of the folded filter against the pouring spout so the air channel remains open. That setup step is small but specific to the system.

The larger vessel creates real costs. Glass needs protected storage and careful handling at the sink. CHEMEX says the carafe can go in a dishwasher only after the collar and rawhide are removed and the glass is secured against other dishes. The package does not add a warming plate, and the manufacturer says not to reheat the vessel in a microwave. If most mornings involve one mug at a time, the table-serving advantage may not justify the size or proprietary filter routine.

Choose the HARIO V60 Plastic 02 for lighter cup-by-cup control

HARIO rates the clear VD-02T for one to four cups and lists a 137 by 116 by 102 millimeter body made in Japan from acrylonitrile-styrene resin. Its first buying benefit is portability: the one-piece plastic cone is light, compact, and much harder to chip than a glass serving brewer. Its second is flexibility: it can sit directly on a mug for one drink or on a compatible server when you want to split a smaller batch.

HARIO describes the conical bed, spiral ridges, and low flow restriction as tools that let pouring speed influence the brew. A faster pour can move water through differently from a slower one, which gives an interested user room to tune grind and technique. A current Tom's Guide comparison likewise separates the V60 as the finesse-oriented option and the CHEMEX as the batch-oriented one. That is useful buying evidence, not a promise that one shape automatically makes better coffee.

The V60 does not include the receiving vessel in the brewer body. You need a stable mug or server beneath it, plus Size 02 paper. The open flow also makes inconsistent pouring easier to notice, so a controlled kettle and repeatable recipe matter. Buyers who avoid hot-water contact with plastic should choose another V60 material or a different brewer, not ignore that preference because the plastic model is lighter.

Match serving size, handling, and filters to your routine

Choose the CHEMEX CM-6A when two or three people usually drink together, carrying one brewer-server to the table is valuable, and careful glass storage is acceptable. Choose the HARIO V60 Plastic 02 when you more often brew one mug, want a dripper that occupies little space, or prefer to choose your own cup or server.

Neither product removes the need to learn a pour-over recipe, and neither should be bought for an unsupported promise of perfect flavor. The strongest decision boundary is physical and repeatable: 30-ounce integrated glass batch versus compact one-to-four-cup plastic dripper. Buy for the routine you perform most often, then use the matching papers and a consistent pour.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01CHEMEX CM-6A / Classic 6-Cup — Classic Series / 6-cup (30 US fl oz) / clear borosilicate glass, natural wood collar and leather tie / one coffeemaker, filters not included

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The 30-ounce vessel can cover a modest shared breakfast batch in one attended pour.
  • Brewing and table service happen in the same glass body, so no separate dripper must be removed from a mug before serving.
THE LIMITS
  • The six-cup name uses five-ounce cups, not six large mugs.
  • Compatible CHEMEX Bonded papers are separate consumables and require specific placement.
  • The glass body needs protected storage, collar removal for dishwasher use, and cannot be microwaved.
  • There is no automatic cycle or warming plate.

02HARIO VD-02T — V60 Plastic Coffee Dripper / Size 02 / Clear

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The light one-piece plastic cone is compact to store and harder to chip than a large glass brewer-server.
  • The Size 02 dripper can serve one mug directly or sit on a separate server, while its open flow gives an interested user room to tune pouring and grind.
THE LIMITS
  • A mug or server and V60 Size 02 papers are required separately.
  • The open flow makes repeatable pouring and grind more consequential.
  • It is not suitable for buyers who want to avoid hot-water contact with plastic.
  • There is no automatic cycle or warming system.
