Dreamfarm Garject vs Joseph Joseph Helix 20102: Two Ways to Clear a Garlic Press

Garject builds scraping and peel ejection into a connected metal press; Helix twists with two hands and separates for cleaning. Compare the whole clove-to-cleanup routine, including force and storage.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose metal Garject for repeated unpeeled-clove pressing with integrated scraping and peel ejection; consider Helix for two-handed twisting and separated cleanup while weighing its reported extraction limitation.

A garlic press can shorten mincing while adding a different chore: garlic sticks to the outer face and the spent skin has to come back out. The metal Dreamfarm Garject DFGA5516 builds a scraper and peel ejector into one connected tool. The green Joseph Joseph Helix 20102 instead uses two-handed twisting and separates into two pieces for cleaning.

Both prepare pressed garlic for a sauce, dressing or marinade. The decision is whether you want to manage the clove through an integrated press-and-clear sequence or prefer a twist mechanism whose parts open up completely. Start with that routine rather than treating every cleaning claim as equivalent.

Follow the clove through pressing and clearing

Dreamfarm says the original Garject accepts unpeeled cloves, with capacity up to three depending on their size. The company recommends removing the hard ends first. After squeezing, opening the handles activates a spring-loaded scraper across the outside of the perforated grill. A separate button then ejects the retained peel.

That gives a frequent garlic user two distinct reasons to choose it: skip separate peeling for the pressing task, then reduce direct handling of the sticky outer layer and spent skin. The controls remain on the connected press. Still inspect the chamber and rinse it afterwards; a scraper and ejector do not promise that every fragment leaves on the first attempt.

Helix takes another route. Separate the two handles, load garlic into the stainless-steel chamber, align the upper part and twist with both hands. Joseph Joseph specifies a chamber for multiple cloves. Its attraction is the two-handed motion and the ability to separate the pressing parts, rather than an integrated scrape-and-eject cycle.

Think about repeated loads. Garject asks you to open and clear the connected tool; Helix asks you to manage two parts and align them again. Neither becomes an electric or automatic processor.

Choose a hand movement before assuming less effort

Garject uses a handle squeeze. Its original metal construction does not remove the need to apply manual pressure, and chamber loading still affects how the task feels. Consider the handle span and the amount of garlic you normally prepare rather than buying on the word powerful.

Helix uses twisting with both hands. That may suit someone who prefers this movement to a conventional squeeze, but it is still a force requirement. Two handles must be held and turned together. It is a poor match when one-handed operation is essential.

Independent testing also warrants caution about extraction. Serious Eats reported that gaps in the Helix pressing arrangement left some garlic unpressed and increased the force needed in its tests. That is the publication's result, not a test performed for this article. It gives a reason to avoid assuming the twist design guarantees complete yield or universal ease.

For either press, a knife remains useful when the recipe calls for slices or deliberately coarse pieces. Choose a pressing mechanism because fine garlic recurs in your cooking, with a realistic view of the motion it requires.

Separate clearing from washing and storage

Both manufacturers allow dishwasher cleaning. Garject's scraper and peel button address material left during preparation; they do not eliminate washing. Rinse promptly and inspect the grid, hinge and moving controls so residue does not dry around them.

Helix's two-piece construction gives access to the chamber when separated. That can make the cleanup arrangement easier to understand, but the two pieces need to be cleaned and kept together. Full separation is useful only if you will reassemble the tool when the next meal starts.

Their construction also changes drawer and hand feel. Dreamfarm lists the original Garject at 19.2 centimetres long and 0.40 kilograms, with chrome-plated zinc and nylon. It is the metal DFGA5516, distinct from the lighter nylon Garject Lite. Joseph Joseph lists Helix at 17.6 by 4.6 by 5.8 centimetres, made from stainless steel and nylon.

Those dimensions are more useful than judging weight from a photo. Check the space available and whether you want a substantial connected utensil or two separable parts.

Buy for the interruption that actually bothers you

Choose Garject DFGA5516 when frequent unpeeled-clove pressing makes scraping and clearing skins a recurring nuisance, and its metal body and squeezing motion fit your hand and drawer. Its integrated clearing sequence is the purchase reason.

Consider Helix 20102 when you prefer two-handed twisting and want the chamber fully accessible through separation. Weigh the extra part alignment and the reported extraction limitation before choosing. Keep a simpler preparation method when garlic is occasional, pressing is uncomfortable or a knife's range of textures matters more than either tool's dedicated mechanism.
