Edifier MR4: Plan the Analog Connections Before the Desk Upgrade
THE BUYING TAKE
Buy for a confirmed analog connection plan and the actual desk footprint. Treat monitor mode and tone controls as settings to evaluate in your room.
Best for
People planning an analog desktop pair with verified source outputs and convenient front headphone access.
The trade-off
Active and passive boxes differ in depth; balanced TRS cables are not in the documented package. Parallel inputs are not an automatic source selector.

Edifier MR4 Black
Original MR4 Black pair / active right and passive left / analog inputs
A speaker upgrade can disappoint before the first track plays if the cables do not match the computer or the boxes leave no sensible place for the screen. The Edifier MR4 is most interesting when you want a defined pair of analog desktop speakers and are willing to plan the connections. Its value is easier to judge from the actual inputs and controls than from a broad promise of studio sound.
This assessment covers the original black MR4 pair, not a white package or another MR-series model. The set contains an active right speaker and a passive left speaker. That distinction matters for power, the inter-speaker cable and where the controls will sit relative to your hand.
Plan the source before choosing the cable
The original MR4 provides balanced quarter-inch TRS inputs, unbalanced RCA inputs and a front 3.5 mm AUX input. These are different connection arrangements, not interchangeable labels for a universal audio socket. Begin with the output actually available on the computer, interface or player.
For an audio interface, check its line outputs and the corresponding cable requirements. For a computer using an analog headphone output, consider the available AUX or RCA route. A computer without a suitable analog output needs a separately verified conversion arrangement; the speaker's analog input list does not establish a direct digital connection.
The manual lists speaker wire, a 3.5 mm audio cable and a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable in the package. It does not list a pair of balanced TRS cables. Include any required additional connection in the total cost rather than discovering a missing part after delivery.
Understand the inputs and front controls
Edifier's manual says the three input methods can be used in parallel. Do not assume the front control is a source selector that automatically silences every other connected device. Start with one source, then check the behavior of additional connections before leaving several devices attached.
The front AUX and headphone sockets serve different purposes. According to the manual, inserting headphones into the headphone output mutes the speakers, and the main dial controls headphone volume. That can be useful when moving from room listening to a private session without reaching around the back.
Monitor and music modes are also separate from input selection. The documented indicators are red for monitor mode and green for music mode. Confirm the selected mode when comparing familiar material, so that an unnoticed setting change does not become a mistaken conclusion about the source.

Measure both boxes, including their depth
The manufacturer's manual gives the active speaker dimensions as 140 by 228 by 197.5 mm, while the passive speaker is 140 by 228 by 184 mm. The unequal depth is a useful detail when working with a shallow shelf or a crowded monitor stand.
Allow for the real cable connections and ventilation as well as those enclosure dimensions. The active box must reach power and connect to its partner. Draw the complete route first, including where the right speaker's front dial can be reached without moving other equipment.
The specified drivers are a four-inch woofer and one-inch tweeter in each speaker, with stated output of 21 watts per channel. Those specifications describe the product; they do not demonstrate that it will sound balanced at every desk position or satisfy every listening level.
Change one setting at a time
The rear low- and high-frequency controls provide another adjustment after placement. Begin with a consistent source and familiar tracks, then make one small change at a time. Otherwise, moving the boxes and changing several controls together makes it difficult to know which decision helped.
Monitor mode is an operating option, not proof that an untreated desk has become a calibrated mixing environment. This article does not include original frequency-response, noise or room measurements. If accurate production decisions are the goal, evaluate the complete listening arrangement rather than relying on the word monitor.
Choose the MR4 when its analog connections, powered-pair arrangement and front headphone access fit a specific desk. If you need wireless playback or a different digital connection, compare products that explicitly document that function. A clear connection plan is a stronger reason to buy than a feature assumed from another model's name.
