Elgato Facecam MK.2: Set Up a Repeatable Desk Shot

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the MK.2 for a deliberate desk setup with separate audio. Measure the working distance and check the actual recording path before treating saved settings as a complete solution.

Best for
Seated presenters and regular callers who already have a microphone and want to save a carefully arranged desktop camera setup.
The trade-off
Fixed focus needs a suitable seating distance. Digital crop costs image quality, uncompressed video needs USB 3.0, and audio requires another device.

Article summary

A fixed-focus webcam with camera-side settings storage makes sense when you use the same seat, lights, and framing regularly. Check the focus distance, USB connection, and separate audio setup first.

Getting the picture right once is useful. Being able to return to that setup matters more when you record a lesson every week or join calls from the same desk. The Elgato Facecam MK.2 combines a lens designed for desktop distances with controls you can save on the camera itself.

Its appeal is a deliberate, repeatable setup. Before buying, look at where you sit, how the camera connects, and what already handles your voice. Those details say more about its fit than the number of software sliders.

Start with the distance from your chair

Elgato specifies a fixed-focus range of 30–120 cm, or about 12–47 inches. Fixed focus means positioning yourself within that working range; it is not autofocus that continually follows an object toward the lens.

Measure from your likely camera position to your face while seated normally. Then consider what happens when you lean back to explain something or move forward to read a screen. This simple check is particularly useful with a deep desk or a monitor mounted well behind the keyboard.

For a seated presenter, that range can make the camera's role clear. For someone who frequently holds small objects close to the lens, it is a reason to investigate a different arrangement. Digital cropping can make an object larger in the frame, but it does not change the lens's focus range.

Save a setup you have actually checked

Camera Hub provides automatic and manual exposure choices, white-balance controls, and adjustments to the picture. Elgato's instructions explain how to save the chosen settings directly to the MK.2's flash memory: use Save in the device section and check for the confirmation mark.

Treat that as the end of a setup session. First arrange your usual light, sit where you normally sit, and make a short recording in the application you intend to use. Inspect skin tones, movement, and the background before keeping the settings.

A saved configuration is not a saved lighting environment. Daylight through a window can change between morning and afternoon. Automatic exposure may suit that room better than a rigid manual setting, and a preview remains useful even when the camera remembers your choices.

Camera Hub's zoom is digital cropping. Tightening the frame can hide an unwanted edge of the room, but Elgato notes the resulting loss of image quality. Start with sensible physical placement, then crop only as much as the presentation needs.

Give the video a suitable USB connection

The MK.2 supports 1080p at 60 frames per second. Elgato specifies USB 3.0 for uncompressed video; USB 2.0 uses MJPEG compression. A connector that physically fits therefore does not, by itself, establish that you have the intended video path.

The quick-start guidance recommends connecting directly to the computer with the supplied USB 3.0 cable or an equivalent cable, without a hub. Check the computer's port specification and the cable provided with your particular package before planning the desk layout.

Next, check the format selected in your recording or meeting application. Choosing a capable webcam does not guarantee that every service will send its maximum format to other participants. Test the actual call or recording workflow you will use.

Keep audio and privacy in the plan

There is no built-in microphone. That is a straightforward fit if a headset or separate microphone already handles your voice, but an extra requirement if you expected one device to provide both sound and picture.

Select that audio device explicitly in the meeting application and record a short spoken sample. A clear video preview cannot tell you whether the correct microphone is active.

The built-in shutter slides across the lens. Close it after the session and manage the separate microphone's mute control independently. The camera also provides a monitor mount and a quarter-inch mounting point for a suitable support.

The MK.2 is worth considering when you want a controllable desk camera and are willing to establish the setup around it. Its saved settings are most useful when paired with a suitable seat position, a checked connection, and an audio arrangement you already understand.
