Fractal Design Terra: Size the Cooler and GPU Together

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose Terra after the complete parts list fits, and when the desk-space saving matters.

Best for
Mini-ITX builders who can coordinate GPU dimensions, cooler height and a compact power supply.
The trade-off
Shared clearance limits component combinations; cooling and noise depend on the full build.

A small case can clear a surprising amount of desk space, but the parts inside still have to share it. Fractal Design Terra makes that tradeoff unusually visible: its central spine moves, allocating room between the processor cooler and graphics card. The Jade model FD-C-TER1N-03 is an appealing starting point for a compact desktop when you are willing to plan those two components together.

Measure the desk and the complete parts list

Fractal lists a 10.4-liter volume and external dimensions of 343 × 153 × 218 mm. Mark that footprint on your desk before ordering. Leave room for rear cables, access to the front ports and unobstructed ventilation. The lifestyle photograph shows one possible arrangement; the monitor and other desk equipment are separate.

Terra uses a Mini-ITX motherboard and an SFX or SFX-L power supply. If you are moving an existing computer into it, check those formats first. A case change can become a motherboard and power-supply purchase as well. Record the exact models of the components you intend to keep, including their connectors and dimensions, before judging the total cost.

Treat cooler and graphics-card clearance as a pair

The manual is more useful than a single maximum specification. It shows CPU-cooler height varying from 48 to 77 mm as the spine position changes. The available graphics-card thickness changes with it. Those endpoints describe different configurations; they are not two maximum allowances that can be used simultaneously.

Card height also matters. In the manual's lower-height GPU category, the endpoint with a 77 mm CPU cooler permits 43 mm of card thickness, while the 48 mm cooler endpoint permits 72 mm. The taller-card category has less thickness available. Use the manual's dimensional drawing to match its axes to the card maker's drawing rather than assuming every manufacturer labels width and height the same way.

For a candidate build, write the cooler height and the graphics card's full dimensions on the same line. Find a spine position that accommodates both, then check the remaining installation requirements. A GPU's length being within the advertised 322 mm ceiling is only one part of this decision. Leave connector routing and the component maker's cable-clearance requirements in the plan.

Build around access, cables and front ports

The side panels lift open and the top slides off, giving access to a compact interior. That helps with assembly, but it does not make cable routing automatic. Follow the installation order in the manual, and pause before closing the panels to check that no cable contacts a fan or presses against a connector.

The included PCIe 4.0 riser is part of the case's layout. Confirm how the motherboard and graphics card should be configured for that connection, especially when reusing parts from another build. A compatibility check before final assembly is easier than troubleshooting after all the cables have been arranged.

The front offers USB-A and USB-C connections, with the latter specified at up to 20Gbps. Check the chosen motherboard's internal headers and capabilities before treating that speed as a complete-system feature. A port on the enclosure cannot supply a capability that the connected board does not support.

Decide what you want the smaller case to achieve

The Jade aluminum exterior and walnut front make the case easy to picture on a desk. Its stronger practical argument is the space it can recover when the selected components suit the layout. Budget for the entire conversion, including any smaller-format parts and the time needed to assemble them carefully.

After building, test your normal applications and games and observe temperatures and fan behavior. Physical fit does not establish cooling performance or noise for every configuration. If your priority is broad component freedom or frequent hardware changes, compare a larger enclosure before buying. Terra is most convincing when the compact footprint is a real benefit and the parts list has already passed the clearance checks.
