JBL Go 4 vs JBL Clip 5 Portable Bluetooth Speakers: Smaller Body or Built-In Carabiner?

Both are IP67, Bluetooth 5.3 JBL portable speakers with Auracast. Choose the Go 4 for the smaller, lighter body; choose the Clip 5 for its built-in carabiner, longer rated battery life, and higher rated output.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose the JBL Go 4 when minimum packed size and weight matter most. Choose the JBL Clip 5 when an integrated carabiner and up to 12 hours of normal rated playtime matter more than carrying a taller, heavier speaker.

The JBL Go 4 and JBL Clip 5 are unusually clean alternatives because both solve the same problem: carry a small Bluetooth speaker for travel, a desk, a patio, a pool bag, or an everyday backpack without moving up to a much larger speaker. Both use Bluetooth 5.3, carry an IP67 dust-and-water rating, work with the JBL Portable app, and support Auracast. The decision comes down to how you want to carry the speaker and how much battery life, output rating, and weight you are willing to add.

The Go 4 is the smaller and lighter choice at 3.7 × 3.0 × 1.7 inches and 0.42 lb, with an integrated fabric loop. The Clip 5 is taller at 3.4 × 5.3 × 1.8 inches and 0.628 lb, but its fully integrated carabiner can attach directly to a backpack or belt loop. JBL rates the Go 4 at 4.2W RMS with up to 7 hours of normal playtime; the Clip 5 is rated at 7W RMS with up to 12 hours. Those differences are large enough to make one model clearly better suited to some carrying habits without pretending either one wins every situation.

Start with how you plan to carry it

If the speaker usually goes inside a small bag, sits on a desk, or gets tossed into luggage, the Go 4 has the simpler size-and-weight argument. At 0.42 lb it is about a third lighter than the Clip 5, and its squat body is easier to justify when every bit of pack space matters. The fabric loop gives you a grab point and can work with your own compatible hook or strap, but the speaker itself does not include the Clip 5's built-in carabiner.

The Clip 5 makes more sense when external carry is part of the plan. JBL redesigned its integrated carabiner with a wider opening so the speaker can clip directly to a bag or belt loop. That saves interior bag space and removes the need to add a separate clip. The tradeoff is a taller and heavier body. Choose based on the way you actually carry gear, not on which silhouette looks more rugged.

Both models are IP67. JBL's support guidance says that rating covers dust resistance and submersion in up to 1 meter of water for as long as 30 minutes. That makes either one a reasonable fit for poolside, beach, patio, and travel use; IP67 therefore does not decide this comparison by itself.

JBL Go 4: choose the smaller, lighter speaker

The Go 4 uses a 45 mm transducer, is rated at 4.2W RMS, and has a stated frequency response of 90 Hz to 20 kHz. Those specifications fit its main buying case: compact personal listening rather than maximum output. The official weight of 0.19 kg and short body make it the easier speaker to leave in a backpack every day.

JBL rates normal music playtime at up to 7 hours, depending on volume and audio content. Playtime Boost can add up to 2 more hours. Charging is rated at about 3 hours. That is enough for many short trips, work sessions, and hotel-room uses, but it is the weaker battery proposition of these two products.

Choose the Go 4 when low weight and small packed size matter more than a built-in clip or longer baseline runtime. It is also the cleaner choice if you already know the speaker will live inside a bag rather than hanging from the outside. Skip it when a full day away from charging is common or when clipping directly to a pack is the main reason you want an ultra-portable speaker.

JBL Clip 5: choose the built-in carabiner and longer battery

The Clip 5 keeps the same ultra-portable idea but shifts more of the design toward all-day external carry. Its 45 mm driver is rated at 7W RMS, with a stated 95 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and a passive radiator. A higher power rating on paper does not prove a specific real-world loudness advantage without controlled testing, but it does show that JBL gives the Clip 5 a higher rated output than the Go 4.

Battery life is the larger practical difference. JBL rates the Clip 5 for up to 12 hours of normal playtime, with up to 3 additional hours from Playtime Boost, again depending on volume and content. Charging is rated at about 3 hours. For a long day outdoors, commuting, or travel where charging access is uncertain, that five-hour difference in normal rated playtime is a more meaningful reason to step up than a vague promise of “better sound.”

The built-in carabiner is the other reason. If you routinely attach gear to a backpack, belt loop, or strap, it turns carrying into part of the product rather than an accessory decision. Skip the Clip 5 when you do not need that hardware and would rather save weight and packed bulk.

What both share—and where the choice ends

Both speakers support Bluetooth 5.3, JBL Portable app controls, IP67 protection, and Auracast multi-speaker expansion. JBL also allows two matching units of each model to pair for stereo. Those shared features mean you do not need to buy the Clip 5 just to get the current JBL app or multi-speaker ecosystem.

The useful split is simpler. Choose the Go 4 for the smallest, lightest package and accept the 7-hour baseline plus fabric-loop carry. Choose the Clip 5 when the integrated carabiner and 12-hour baseline matter enough to justify the extra height and weight. If you need substantially deeper bass, much higher room output, or battery life beyond what either compact model is designed to provide, compare a larger portable speaker instead of forcing one of these two into the wrong job.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01JBL JBL Go 4 / JBLGO4BLKAM — Black / parent

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The 0.42-pound body and compact dimensions make Go 4 easier to keep inside a small bag or backpack when minimum packed weight and bulk matter most.
  • IP67 plus Bluetooth 5.3, app controls, and Auracast preserve the current JBL portable-speaker ecosystem without requiring the heavier Clip 5.
THE LIMITS
  • Normal music playtime is rated up to 7 hours, shorter than the Clip 5's 12-hour normal rating.
  • The integrated fabric loop is not a built-in carabiner, so direct clip-on carry may require the user's own compatible hardware.
  • The 4.2W RMS rating and compact enclosure should not be treated as a substitute for a larger speaker when high room output or deep bass is the real priority.

02JBL JBLCLIP5BLKAM — Clip 5 / Black

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • The wider integrated carabiner lets Clip 5 attach directly to a backpack, belt loop, or compatible gear instead of consuming interior bag space or needing a separate clip.
  • Up to 12 hours of normal rated playtime gives substantially more manufacturer-rated time away from charging than the Go 4's 7-hour baseline.
THE LIMITS
  • The 0.628-pound body is heavier and the 5.3-inch height is taller than Go 4, so the carabiner and battery advantages come with more carried bulk.
  • A 7W RMS rating is a specification, not controlled proof of a particular real-world loudness or sound-quality advantage.
  • Like Go 4, Clip 5 is still an ultra-portable speaker and should not be forced into large-room or deep-bass duties better served by a larger model.
