Jorgensen 70700 Mini Block Plane for Small Woodwork

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the 70700 for compact handling and adjustable blade projection on small parts. Plan for edge care; use a longer plane for broad flattening.

Best for
Woodworkers and model makers handling small details who want adjustable blade projection and accept the setup and care of a conventional plane blade.
The trade-off
Cap pressure must be loosened before adjusting the blade and retightened afterward. The O1 edge needs honing and corrosion care, and the short sole is a limited reference for larger work.

Article summary

The No.101 has a rear blade adjuster and a body just 3.5 inches long. It suits small woodworking details when you want to set the cut yourself and are willing to sharpen the blade and protect it from rust.

A small wooden model part may need just a light pass over a local area, with the blade backed off as the work gets finer. The Jorgensen 70700 No.101 Mini Block Plane offers that adjustment in a short body. This orange hand plane uses one O1 tool-steel blade, making setup and edge care part of the choice for small woodworking tasks.

Loosen the cap, then move the blade

The broad spinwheel beneath the black lever cap and the smaller adjuster at the rear do different jobs. The spinwheel controls the cap's pressure on the blade. The captive rear nut advances or retracts the blade, changing its projection through the opening in the sole.

Jorgensen's instructions say to loosen the cap pressure slightly before making that adjustment. About a quarter turn of the spinwheel should allow the blade to move. Adjust with the rear nut, then tighten the spinwheel again without overtightening it. Simply turning the clamping wheel is not the depth-setting step.

Try the setting on suitable scrap before committing to the part, and support the work securely. Examine that trial cut before advancing the blade further. Sharpness, grain and handling still affect the result, so a chosen setting needs judgment at the workpiece.

Four original supplier panels show the Jorgensen 70700 cap spinwheel, rear blade-adjuster nut and opening in the sole.

A short body for local woodwork

The manufacturer's manual gives the body as 3.5 inches long and 1.25 inches wide, with a tool weight of 7 ounces. The blade is 7/8 inch wide. That compact format is worth considering when a much longer plane would crowd the area around a small component. The body is ductile iron, and the cap is zinc alloy.

Jorgensen names musical instrument building, fine furniture and model making as examples of detail-oriented work. Consider the individual parts you handle, not just the overall size of the project. A large furniture project can still include small pieces on which local work is needed. The miniature format earns its place when those are recurring tasks at your bench.

A short sole provides a local reference, while a longer plane spans more of a board. Choose a longer tool when straightening long edges or flattening a broad surface is the main job. Check the stated body dimensions against the way you prefer to hold a plane, too; compact size alone cannot establish a comfortable grip.

Read the cutting angle as a whole

The manual specifies a 20-degree blade bed and a 25-degree primary bevel facing up. Together, those give a 45-degree cutting angle. The bed angle alone therefore does not describe the edge's approach to the wood.

Those figures describe the stated primary-bevel geometry. Honing a secondary bevel can change the angle at the cutting edge. Jorgensen discusses that further edge work in its instructions, so treat the initial geometry and subsequent sharpening as related choices when maintaining the blade.

Keep the edge sharp and protected

O1 tool steel needs edge care and protection from rust. Jorgensen says the supplied blade is ready to use and describes further honing. Plan to maintain that edge as part of owning the plane, even when it needs no immediate work on arrival.

The maker identifies replacement blade 70701 for this No.101. Keep that model reference with the tool's instructions if the blade eventually needs replacing; it identifies the matching part to look for.

Keep the blade lightly oiled, particularly during storage. The instructions also call for light oil on the threaded rod, rear adjuster nut and spinwheel so those parts move freely. Maintenance covers both the edge and the controls that set it.

The 70700 makes sense for small woodwork that benefits from an adjustable blade in a short body. Allow for setup, blade care and secure support for the work. When long reference surfaces matter more than compact handling, prioritize a longer plane.
