A small chrome fitting needs a wrench that fits its flats without leaving the marks that toothed pliers can make. The KNIPEX 86 03 125 Mini Pliers Wrench tackles that specific problem with smooth jaws and a push-button adjustment, in a tool only about five inches long.

Its strongest case is a compact repair kit: one adjustable tool for different small nuts, with less bulk than carrying several fixed-size wrenches. The small size also sets the boundary. This is a tool to choose around the fittings you actually encounter, rather than a replacement for every wrench in the house.

Put smooth jaws against the flats

The jaws stay parallel around the workpiece, placing flat gripping surfaces against a nut or fitting. That contact is the useful difference from toothed gripping pliers, whose teeth bite into the surface. On a visible plated fitting, avoiding those tooth marks can matter as much as turning it.

Smooth does not mean incapable of scratching. KNIPEX notes that damaged pliers-wrench jaws can compromise delicate finishes. Check the gripping surfaces and how they meet the fitting before applying pressure; an expensive decorative finish deserves more care than an assumption based on the word smooth.

This design makes most sense when the part offers opposing flats. If the job primarily involves gripping round pipe, compare tools intended for that shape. Also keep the product names straight: a KNIPEX Cobra uses toothed jaws, while this 86-series pliers wrench uses smooth ones. They solve different gripping problems.

Adjust once, then work around the nut

The button selects among 11 adjustment positions. Those positions establish the working range; they do not limit you to 11 nut sizes. Within that range, the parallel jaws accommodate intermediate widths, so both inch and metric fasteners can be candidates.

KNIPEX also describes a ratchet-like action: the jaws can release and regrip during repeated turns. That is useful when a connection needs several short movements, although the tool still needs room for the handles to move. It is a different mechanism from a socket ratchet, so do not buy it expecting the same access to recessed fasteners.

The maximum published nut capacity is 7/8 inch, or 23 mm. Compare that with the distance across the opposing flats, not a pipe's nominal size. A fitting can look small and still exceed the jaw opening; checking the actual part is more reliable than deciding from a photograph.

Decide what five inches buys you

The 125 mm length and published 105 g weight, about 3.7 ounces, make this a plausible addition to a small tool roll or household repair drawer. The compact head and short handles favor accessible small connections where carrying a larger tool would be inconvenient.

That convenience comes with less reach and leverage than a longer tool. If your regular work involves large fittings or stubborn fasteners, choose an appropriately sized wrench for those tasks. The 23 mm capacity is an opening limit, not a promise that this little tool can supply whatever turning force a fitting needs.

For occasional work on one known nut size, a fixed-size wrench you already own may cover the job. The Mini earns its place when several small sizes share the same kit and the smooth contact surfaces have a purpose. Its appeal is consolidation, not adding another tool beside an adequate one.

Keep the red handles in perspective

This selection is one chrome-plated 86 03 125 with red plastic-coated handles. The coating is not electrical insulation: KNIPEX identifies this model as noninsulated. Never use it on live circuits; switch off power first. Follow the manufacturer's instruction to wear approved eye protection as well.

Include suitable eye protection in your setup if you do not already have it. Before buying, check the widths and surrounding space of two or three fittings you expect to work on. If the Mini fits those jobs and their finish makes smooth contact useful, it has a clear reason to join the kit.
