KNIPEX 86 05 250 Pliers Wrench Holds Finished Fittings With Smooth Parallel Jaws

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the KNIPEX 86 05 250 when finished nuts and fittings, frequent size changes and limited swing space make smooth parallel jaws and a ratchet-like stroke useful; skip it for round pipe, insulated work, specified final torque or a lighter everyday carry.

Best for
Plumbing, maintenance and mechanical work that moves among finished hex fittings and benefits from quick push-button width changes without using serrated jaws.
The trade-off
KNIPEX's global data sheet lists the 10-inch tool at 490 grams; it still needs handle swing and manual repositioning, has no torque scale or electrical insulation, and its smooth jaws are not intended to bite round pipe.

Article summary

The 10-inch KNIPEX 86 05 250 uses smooth parallel jaws, push-button sizing and a ratchet-like jaw stroke across fittings up to 2 inches; its global data sheet's 490-gram figure, manual repositioning and lack of teeth or torque indication define where another wrench is better.

A chrome faucet nut can be easy to reach and still awkward to turn. A conventional adjustable wrench needs repeated jaw checks, while serrated pliers can leave tooth marks on a finished surface. The KNIPEX 86 05 250 Pliers Wrench takes a different approach: its push-button joint sets the opening, and squeezing the handles keeps two smooth jaws parallel on the flats of the fitting.

This is the 10-inch, chrome-plated 86 05 250 with multi-component comfort grips, not KNIPEX's toothed Cobra water-pump pliers and not the tethered 86 05 250 T. KNIPEX's global data sheet for this exact article number lists a 2-inch (52 mm) nut capacity, 19 adjustment positions, a 490-gram weight, and a body measuring 250 by 57 by 18 mm. Those details make it a broad-capacity hand tool, but not a pocket-size substitute for every wrench.

Smooth parallel jaws suit finished fittings

The most useful distinction is at the workpiece. KNIPEX specifies smooth, parallel jaws and zero-backlash jaw pressure for plated fittings and other sensitive edges. Instead of biting with teeth, the jaws bear against opposing flats as the handles close. That makes the tool well suited to chrome plumbing hardware, brass fittings, and fasteners whose visible finish matters.

Independent long-term reviews of the Pliers Wrench design reach the same practical conclusion: the parallel jaws spread force more evenly than a typical adjustable wrench and are less likely to round a fastener when they are fully seated. The qualification matters. Smooth jaws still need clean, flat contact, and they are not the right choice for twisting a round pipe where serrated pipe pliers are meant to bite.

Push-button sizing replaces a worm screw

Press the joint button, slide the lower jaw against the workpiece, release the button, and squeeze the handles. The 19 indexed positions establish the working range, while the moving jaw closes the remaining gap. KNIPEX says the joint resists unintended shifting, so the opening does not rely on a worm screw that can gradually wander.

That sequence is helpful when moving among supply-line nuts, compression fittings, and mixed metric or inch hardware. It is also faster to reset one-handed than turning an adjustable-wrench wheel several revolutions. The button is not an automatic size sensor, however: the user still has to select a suitable position and keep the jaws square to the flats.

The jaw stroke creates a ratchet-like workflow

Once the tool is adjusted, slightly easing handle pressure lets the jaws open enough to reposition on the same fastener. Squeeze again and the parallel jaws close. KNIPEX describes this as a ratchet principle, and the greater-than-10:1 lever transmission turns hand force into strong clamping pressure.

This can shorten repetitive turns where a socket will not fit, especially under a sink or beside closely spaced fittings. It is not a true geared ratchet: the tool must still be rocked and reseated, and clearance for the 10-inch handles remains necessary. It also has no torque scale, so specified final torque still calls for the appropriate calibrated wrench.

Ten-inch reach brings useful capacity and real bulk

The 52 mm opening covers fittings far larger than the handle length might suggest, and the multi-component grips give the palm more surface than KNIPEX's slimmer dipped-handle versions. Chrome plating also makes the tool easier to wipe after plumbing work. At the 490 grams listed in KNIPEX's global data sheet, though, this model is substantially heavier than a small adjustable wrench and takes more drawer or pouch space than the 6- or 7.25-inch Pliers Wrench variants.

Choose the 86 05 250 when one tool regularly needs to move between finished nuts and fittings, quick width changes, and confined jobs that benefit from a ratchet-like stroke. Skip it when you mainly grip round pipe, need insulated handles, work to a specified torque, or would carry a smaller wrench more often than you would use the 2-inch capacity.
