Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety LidLifter: Open Cans Without the Usual Sharp Rim

THE BUYING TAKE

A worthwhile upgrade when sharp cut rims and loose lids are the parts of opening cans you dislike most; the side-cut mechanism is the reason to pay more.

Best for
Home cooks who open cans regularly and want a side-cut opener that lifts the separated lid without putting fingers under it.
The trade-off
It costs more than a basic opener, requires a different operating sequence, is for domestic cans, and should be hand-washed and dried before storage.

A traditional can opener does two jobs at once: it cuts through the lid and leaves you to deal with the cut metal afterward. The black Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety LidLifter changes where the cut happens. Instead of slicing down through the top, its wheel works around the outside bead of the lid, then a small pair of built-in pliers lifts the separated top away.

That difference is the whole reason to consider it. If you open canned tomatoes, beans or pet food often, the useful upgrade is not speed. It is finishing with a lid and rim designed to avoid the exposed sharp edge left by a conventional top-cut opener.

It grips the can before you start cranking

Set the LidLifter on top of the can with its mechanism aligned over the rim, then turn the large knob clockwise. Kuhn Rikon says the opener automatically grips the lid as the wheel engages from the side. You do not squeeze two handles together while turning, which makes the motion different from the familiar wing-style opener.

Keep turning until you complete one circle and feel the resistance decrease. That change is the stop signal. The manufacturer specifically warns against continuing beyond a full circle because over-turning can create burrs or metal slivers. Turn the knob counter-clockwise to release the opener.

The can may not look open at first because the lid is still sitting in place. That is normal for this mechanism, not a reason to cut another lap.

The little pliers finish the job

A push button on the side operates a pair of mini-pliers. Grip the rim of the separated lid with them and lift. Your fingers do not need to pry underneath the metal, and the cutting wheel is designed not to enter the food area.

This is also why the opener makes more sense than a standard model for someone who dislikes fishing a loose lid out of a can. The lid does not fall inward during the cut. The side-cut design keeps the opening process at the rim.

There is also a ring-pull tool for cans with tabs. It is a useful extra, but it should not distract from the main buying reason: the side-cutting LidLifter mechanism.

Black SKU 2240 is the version to match

This article covers the black Auto Safety LidLifter, Kuhn Rikon US SKU 2240, matched to Amazon US ASIN B000I7GST2. Kuhn Rikon lists the tool at about 8.1 inches long, 2.56 inches wide and 2.72 inches high. The body is plastic, with a stainless-steel cutting mechanism described on the brand's UK product page.

Current Amazon-market tracking for the exact black ASIN shows a 4.5-star rating with more than 16,000 reviews and an estimated 500-plus monthly units. Those figures are a current demand signal, not a guarantee of today's price or future rating. The manufacturer currently lists the black SKU at $28.75 but marks it out of stock on its own US store; Amazon availability can differ.

The color matters for identity because Kuhn Rikon sells the same LidLifter concept in red and white. Do not assume a different color listing is the exact same Amazon child ASIN.

Know the limits before replacing a basic opener

Kuhn Rikon labels this model for domestic use and says it is not intended for commercial cans. It also calls for hand washing in warm soapy water and complete drying before storage. This is not a dishwasher-toss tool.

The unusual mechanism has a small learning curve. If you expect the wheel to bite into the top like a traditional opener, the first use can feel wrong. Follow the full-circle cue, release counter-clockwise, then use the pliers instead of forcing the lid by hand.

If your current opener cuts cleanly and you do not mind handling the lid, there is little urgency to replace it. The Auto Safety LidLifter earns its higher price when the outside-rim cut and hands-off lid removal solve a nuisance you encounter repeatedly.
