Kuhn Rikon Epicurean 2315 vs Zulay Premium Garlic Press: Open the Sieve or Use the Brush?

Both press garlic manually; Kuhn Rikon exposes its sieve for cleaning, while the silver Zulay set adds a brush and silicone peeler. Compare what happens after squeezing before choosing either tool.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose Epicurean 2315 when a swing-out sieve solves recurring cleanup trouble; choose the silver Zulay set when a conventional press, cleaning brush and optional peeler fit your routine.

A garlic press earns its drawer space after the garlic reaches the bowl. Sticky pulp remains in the holes, skin stays in the chamber, and the small utensil still needs washing. The Kuhn Rikon Epicurean 2315 and silver Zulay Kitchen Premium Garlic Press approach that cleanup differently: one opens its stainless sieve; the other includes a separate brush and silicone peeler.

Both are manual alternatives for preparing fine garlic for a dressing, marinade or sauce. Neither replaces a knife for slices or coarse pieces. Start with the recipe's desired texture, then ask which cleanup arrangement would actually change your routine.

Compare access to the residue, not an easy-clean label

Kuhn Rikon's most distinctive feature is the hinged sieve. Swinging it outward exposes the perforated surface and pressing area, so retained skin and garlic can be reached rather than scrubbed through a closed chamber. The stainless body keeps that cleaning feature attached to the press itself.

That is a meaningful buying reason when residue trapped behind a fixed screen is the frustration with your current tool. It is not self-cleaning. Garlic still needs removing, and inspecting the holes before drying remains part of ownership. An opening sieve cannot compensate for leaving pulp to harden until the following day.

Zulay includes a small cleaning brush for reaching bits in the chamber. That offers a different kind of assistance: an accessory addresses the remaining food, rather than a swing-out sieve being the central upgrade. The manufacturer specifically recommends immediate rinsing and using the brush on stuck garlic. Choose around whether you value direct opening access or would reliably keep and use the brush.

Separate pressing without peeling from the peeler accessory

Kuhn Rikon says the Epicurean can press peeled or unpeeled cloves. Garlic passes through while the skin remains behind, so you can skip a separate peeling stage when a recipe wants pressed garlic. Empty the retained material between loads; do not treat that convenience as unlimited chamber capacity.

The selected Zulay set also supports pressing unpeeled garlic with the peel retained in the chamber. Its studded pressing surface and perforated chamber produce a paste through a handle squeeze. That is a practical shortcut for a small amount of fine garlic, with the same need to remove leftovers and reload.

Its silicone peeler has a separate purpose. It can prepare peeled cloves before pressing, or help when a different recipe calls for knife-cut garlic. It does not need to be used merely because it is in the set. A buyer who already peels comfortably may gain more from the brush than the peeler; a buyer who wants both should allow storage for two loose accessories.

Read permitted cleaning and preferred care separately

Kuhn Rikon lists the Epicurean as dishwasher safe while recommending hand washing and air drying. Those statements are compatible: dishwasher use is allowed, but hand care is the maker's preferred routine. Open the sieve, remove food, clean the tool and let it dry before storage.

Zulay also allows dishwasher cleaning and recommends rinsing promptly to prevent residue hardening. Its brush can help clear the chamber first. Neither press becomes maintenance-free when a dishwasher is available, and neither cleaning claim guarantees that a dried, loaded tool emerges spotless.

For a rinse-as-you-cook kitchen, either arrangement can fit. The distinction is where the help resides: Kuhn Rikon builds access into the press; Zulay supplies a separate small implement. Consider what happens during a busy dinner, when the brush is elsewhere or several cloves are needed in succession. That is a more useful comparison than counting accessories or relying on promotional speed claims.

Choose the upgrade your current routine needs

Both tools still require a squeezing motion. Neither a curved handle nor manufacturer language about reduced effort establishes comfort for every hand. If squeezing is the main obstacle, compare another preparation method instead of assuming a premium lever press solves it.

The Epicurean is model 2315, not Kuhn Rikon's other presses. Its official specification lists manufacture in China; the brand's Swiss identity does not make this a Swiss-made tool. The selected Zulay is the Large, Imperial Silver package with the separate peeler and brush, rather than a different comfort-grip or oversized model.

Choose Kuhn Rikon when frequent pressing makes opening the sieve for cleanup the worthwhile improvement. Choose the Zulay set when you want a conventional squeeze press with a dedicated residue brush and optional peeling accessory. Keep your knife when varied cuts matter or pressing garlic rarely happens. The better purchase is the tool whose cleanup you will complete, not the one with the most ambitious convenience language.
