Lisle 22800 Wheel Stud Installer: Pull a New Stud Into the Hub

THE BUYING TAKE

The Lisle 22800 is a focused, quick-to-position way to pull compatible replacement studs into a hub. Its bearing reduces setup friction, but alignment, full seating and bearing condition remain the user's responsibility.

Best for
DIY mechanics and repair shops replacing compatible press-in wheel studs on cars and light-duty trucks who want a dedicated alternative to improvised washer stacks.
The trade-off
It installs rather than removes studs, needs enough thread and hub clearance to start square, and has no seating stop. The internal bearing is a consumable part, and real user reports include early failures.

Article summary

The Lisle 22800 uses a bearing-backed body and the vehicle's lug nut to draw a replacement wheel stud into its hub. It is faster to set up than a stack of washers, but the bearing is a wear item and correct stud alignment still matters.

A damaged wheel stud can turn a brake or tire job into a hunt for washers, spacers and a sacrificial lug nut. The Lisle 22800 replaces that improvised stack with one compact, bearing-backed installer. Slide it over the new stud, thread on a lug nut, and turn the nut with a ratchet or impact wrench so the stud is drawn into the hub.

That simple mechanism is the reason to buy it. The tool gives the lug nut a broad, purpose-made surface while its bearing reduces the twisting friction that a washer stack creates. It does not remove an old stud, choose the correct replacement, or guarantee that a new stud enters straight. Think of it as a controlled pulling fixture for the installation step, not a complete wheel-stud repair kit.

A bearing separates pulling force from twisting friction

Lisle's official instructions are brief: place the tool over the stud shaft, tighten the lug nut against it, and continue until the new stud is securely in place. The black cylindrical body surrounds the exposed threads, while the lug nut bears against the tool rather than directly against the hub face.

In practical terms, the internal bearing is what distinguishes this from a pile of flat washers. Independent shop discussion and retailer feedback describe less resistance at the turning surface and a more repeatable setup. That can be valuable when several studs need replacement or when you do not want to collect a different washer stack for each hub shape.

Start square and watch the back of the hub

The installer still depends on correct preparation. Match the replacement stud to the vehicle, align its splines with the hub opening, and make sure enough clean thread is exposed to engage the lug nut without cross-threading. Hold the stud square from behind while starting the pull.

As the nut turns, watch the stud head at the back of the hub. Stop when the head is fully and evenly seated; the tool provides force but no automatic stop or seating indicator. If the stud cocks, the nut binds, or the required force rises abruptly, back off and inspect instead of driving harder. Vehicle-specific clearance may also limit access around brakes, dust shields or hub castings.

Ratchet control or impact speed is your choice

Lisle approves use with either a ratchet or an impact wrench. A hand ratchet gives deliberate feedback and may be the better choice for an occasional repair. An impact can make repeated installation quicker, as the exact-model Amazon image shows, but speed makes it easier to miss binding or incomplete alignment.

The installer is only for drawing the stud into place. Afterward, assemble the wheel and tighten its fasteners according to the vehicle maker's sequence and torque specification. Do not treat the impact setting used during installation as a substitute for final wheel torque.

The bearing is replaceable because it wears

Lisle explicitly says the bearing wears with use and is not covered by warranty. The company sells the 22820 replacement bearing and dust shield, which is useful if the main body remains serviceable. This is an honest limitation, not a footnote to ignore.

Hands-on retailer feedback is mostly favorable, but it includes reports of bearings stopping, separating or shedding balls after very little use. Those reports do not establish a universal failure rate; they do show why the bearing should turn freely before each job and why you should stop if the body separates or the bearing seizes.

Choose the 22800 if you replace press-in wheel studs often enough to want a dedicated, quick-to-position tool. Skip it if you need removal capability, if the hub gives no room for the body, or if your service procedure requires a press. The payoff is a cleaner setup and lower turning friction—not permission to ignore alignment, seating or final torque.
