Lisle 24680 Coolant Funnel: Keep the Coolant Level in View

THE BUYING TAKE

A useful kit when compatible fittings can improve filler access and keep coolant visible, with a stopper for retaining the remainder during the specified removal process.

Best for
People servicing compatible cooling systems who want a visible filling point and options for angled or recessed filler openings.
The trade-off
Fit must be confirmed, and the vehicle's filling and bleeding procedure still applies. Monitoring remains manual, and the stopper must not trap pressure.

Article summary

A clear funnel, matching fittings and extension pieces create a visible filling point on compatible cooling systems. The 24680 also provides a stopper for leftover fluid and a lid for keeping the small parts together.

A filler neck tucked below surrounding engine-bay parts can leave little room for a coolant bottle and a clear view of the opening. The Lisle 24680 coolant funnel connects through a cap and adapter, with extension pieces that help position its clear body above an awkward opening. You can watch the liquid in the funnel as it enters a compatible cooling system.

Match the opening, then position the funnel

The 24680 supplies five adapters and four caps. They provide several connection options, with a properly sized adapter seated in the appropriate cap for the radiator-cap setup. Lisle's instructions require a secure fit without movement or leakage. Confirm the appropriate fitting for your exact vehicle before buying this Standard Adapters kit.

Once the connection is matched, a five-inch straight extension and two 45-degree elbows provide positioning choices. The extension can raise the funnel above an obstruction; an elbow changes the direction of the connection. Lisle permits combinations of these pieces for difficult locations, including some surge-tank applications.

The engine-bay photo shows the funnel above a straight extension and an elbow near the filler. That arrangement explains the useful difference between a wide funnel opening and a wide opening you can actually reach. Compare the route around your own shroud, brackets and nearby components before choosing the kit for access alone.

Allow room above the installed funnel for the pouring bottle and for removing the funnel afterward. A connection that clears the surrounding hardware still needs to leave its bowl easy to reach and watch.

Keep the level visible as coolant goes in

The clear body gives you a view of the liquid remaining in the funnel. Instead of looking only into a narrow filler neck, you can follow that visible level while adding coolant. This is especially relevant when the neck itself sits low in the engine bay but the funnel can be positioned higher.

Set up only after the system has cooled, following the vehicle's service instructions. Lisle warns that opening the cap while the radiator is hot can release hot coolant and cause burns.

When the procedure requires the engine to run, Lisle specifies idle speed. If the coolant rises excessively, stop the engine and wait for the level to lower as instructed. Keep watching during this stage so you can respond.

Bleeding remains specific to the vehicle. Lisle's sheet calls for using bleeder screws where fitted; a visible coolant level alone cannot confirm that all air is gone. Complete the required bleeding steps for the vehicle.

Handle leftover coolant before packing away

The long fluid stopper has a separate job at the end of the process. Used in Lisle's specified finishing sequence, it retains coolant in the funnel while the funnel is removed from its adapter. The remainder can then be emptied into a suitable container or reservoir as directed, instead of being allowed to drain from the lifted funnel's stem.

Lisle warns against allowing pressure to build with the stopper inserted. Follow its complete finishing sequence before lifting the funnel. The stopper's value is in handling the remaining fluid during removal; it is not a reason to keep a running filling process plugged.

The lid is for covering the funnel and storing the caps and adapters inside between jobs. At the next job, those matching fittings are with the funnel instead of scattered among loose sockets and adapters in a tool cabinet.

Its most useful job is a service fill at an awkward but compatible neck. There, the adapter holds the connection, the fittings establish the route and the clear funnel leaves the liquid in view. For a straightforward top-up through an easily reached reservoir, consider whether you need a full adapter kit.
