Logitech M650 L vs G305 Wireless Mice: Scrolling or Gaming?
Two AA-powered wireless mice take different routes: M650 L favors large-hand document work and Bluetooth; G305 favors a compact shell, LIGHTSPEED and programmable controls.
Choose M650 L for large-hand fit, quieter document work and Bluetooth; choose G305 for its compact gaming control layout when a USB receiver fits your setup.

A wireless mouse can make the same desk feel very different without changing the computer. The black Logitech Signature M650 L and black Logitech G305 LIGHTSPEED both replace a conventional pointing mouse, use an AA battery and provide thumb buttons. Their strongest reasons to buy diverge at the scroll wheel, connection and shape.
Choose around the task you repeat most: moving through documents quietly, or controlling a pointer with gaming-oriented settings. Buying both is unnecessary for someone seeking one everyday mouse. Neither has built-in USB charging, and a higher sensitivity number cannot settle whether the shell fits your hand.
Start with the shape you can hold comfortably
The M650 L is the large-hand version of the Signature family. Logitech recommends the regular M650 for smaller hands and the L for larger hands. This comparison covers the black right-handed L, not the separate M650 L Left. Its contoured body, thumb area and side grips are a concrete reason to consider it when a compact mouse leaves your hand crowded.
The G305 has a more compact body: Logitech lists 116.6 by 62.15 by 38.2 millimeters and 99 grams with an AA battery. Its two thumb buttons sit on the left side. The relatively even-looking shell therefore does not make its full button layout equally accessible to both hands.
Dimensions are a starting point, not a comfort test. A large palm resting on the M650 L and a fingertip grip on the G305 are different arrangements. Consider where your fingers fall and whether you can reach the side buttons without twisting. Neither product establishes relief from wrist pain or a guarantee of comfort through a full workday.

Decide whether scrolling or gaming settings earn the upgrade
For long documents, the M650 L's SmartWheel is its second clear purchase reason. Slow movement gives controlled line-by-line scrolling; a faster flick changes to rapid scrolling. That lets one wheel handle a precise spreadsheet check and a long page without a separate mode-switch step.
SilentTouch clicks also target shared desks and calls. Logitech's noise comparison is against its M185 reference mouse, not the G305, so it does not establish a measured percentage difference between these two choices. The useful claim is quiet-click design, without pretending this comparison performed an acoustic test.
The G305 instead provides a HERO sensor with a documented 200–12,000 DPI range and a manufacturer-rated 1 ms LIGHTSPEED report interval in Performance mode. Those controls give a gaming user a reason to choose it, but maximum DPI is not a universal better-mouse score.
Its six programmable controls include the two thumb buttons and a DPI button behind the wheel. G HUB handles advanced assignments, and one onboard profile can retain a basic configuration. That is a second distinct G305 purchase reason for someone who wants a chosen control layout. It lacks wheel tilt and RGB lighting; choose it for controls you will use rather than extras it does not have.
Check the connection before counting available ports
The M650 L can connect through Bluetooth Low Energy or the included Logi Bolt USB receiver. Bluetooth is useful when a compatible laptop has no convenient spare USB port. Bolt gives another connection route when a receiver fits the setup.
That choice does not make the M650 L a multi-computer switching mouse. Plan around the actual device and pairing routine rather than assuming two connection methods mean effortless simultaneous use.
The G305 uses its LIGHTSPEED USB receiver and does not offer Bluetooth. A laptop with only USB-C may need a suitable adapter or dock. Its internal receiver storage helps when packing, but the dongle still has to be connected during use. Bolt and LIGHTSPEED are different receiver systems; the two mice do not share one interchangeable receiver.
Treat battery figures as different usage scenarios
Both use a replaceable AA cell, so either needs battery replacement instead of a charging cable. Logitech rates the M650 family for up to 24 months. For G305, it specifies up to 250 hours of continuous gaming in Performance mode, with a separate Endurance-mode estimate for ordinary use. These are different scenarios, not a controlled battery comparison.
Pick M650 L when large-hand fit, adaptable scrolling, quieter clicks and Bluetooth answer your daily desk needs. Pick G305 when its compact shape, LIGHTSPEED connection and programmable gaming controls matter more than Bluetooth or quiet-click features.
Keep an existing mouse if it already fits and covers those tasks. Skip both when built-in charging, a left-handed thumb layout or more elaborate scrolling controls are essential. The worthwhile upgrade is the feature that removes a recurring annoyance, not a specification you never change.
