Nintendo Switch OLED Game Console: 7-Inch Handheld Screen

THE BUYING TAKE

The Nintendo Switch OLED has a 7-inch, 1280 × 720 OLED screen; the standard Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD at the same resolution. Choose the Switch OLED for handheld time with the original Switch library when its complete price leaves a worthwhile saving against Switch 2.

Best for
Players with a clear list of original Switch games who expect to use the built-in screen regularly.
The trade-off
The screen is 720p and TV output tops out at 1080p. It cannot run Switch 2-exclusive games; games, extra storage, and some multiplayer features add cost.

The TV is occupied, but you still have half an hour for the game you started yesterday. The Nintendo Switch OLED lets that session move to its own 7-inch screen, with the controllers attached or the console resting on a table.

Buy for the screen you will actually use

The standard Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD; this model expands that to a 7-inch OLED panel. Both screens have the same 720p resolution, so the change is a larger viewing area and a different display technology. Nintendo describes the OLED screen as delivering vivid color and crisp contrast. You use those benefits when the console is in your hands or on a tabletop. If the console will spend nearly all its time docked, your television does the displaying, and the OLED panel contributes little to that routine.

Docking supports TV output up to 1080p; buying the OLED model does not add 4K output. An owner of a working standard Switch should therefore judge this as a change to the portable viewing experience, rather than a reason to replace a satisfactory TV setup.

Set it down and keep the controllers

The wide rear stand lets you adjust the viewing angle for tabletop play. Slide off the two included white Joy-Con controllers and you can rest the screen on a suitable table while holding the controls separately. This is useful when holding the whole console through a longer session feels less appealing.

For a compatible local multiplayer game, separate Joy-Con controllers can let two people share the screen. Check the game's controller requirements first: the included pair does not provide every game's full multiplayer setup. A seven-inch display also becomes a shared viewing area, so consider how close both players can sit.

The white dock includes a wired LAN port for TV mode. That gives a home setup an Ethernet option without a separate LAN adapter, although the network cable is an extra purchase. The dock, power adapter, HDMI cable, Joy-Con grip, and wrist straps are included in the standard white set.

Plan the bag around games and power

Nintendo specifies approximately 4.5 to 9 hours of battery life, depending on the game. Treat that as a planning range, especially for a trip with several long stretches away from an outlet. Charging takes approximately three hours in sleep mode. Bring the supplied adapter when an overnight stay is part of the plan.

Internal storage is 64GB, with some space reserved for the system. Check the download sizes of the games you intend to keep installed before deciding whether to add a microSD card. Compatible cards are sold separately, and using microSDXC requires an internet connection for a system update.

Games are sold separately in this standard console set. Add the titles you want, any storage card, a suitable carrying case, and any extra controllers to the purchase comparison. For applicable online play, include a Nintendo Switch Online membership and check the game's requirements.

Let your game list settle the generation question

The OLED model runs the original Nintendo Switch library. Nintendo notes that some Nintendo Labo accessories do not fit its dimensions cleanly, so check compatibility if those are part of your collection. It cannot run Switch 2-exclusive games.

Switch 2 can also run compatible physical and digital Switch games, with exceptions Nintendo lists by title. Owning an original Switch game collection therefore does not automatically make the OLED model the only sensible choice. Check the exact games on that list before comparing systems.

Build two shopping baskets from sellers with comparable condition and return terms. Include the games you plan to play first, storage you actually need, and essential accessories. Count a bundled game as a saving only if you would otherwise buy it. A sizeable price gap can leave room for more of your chosen games; a small gap makes the OLED's older hardware harder to justify. If your next must-have release requires Switch 2, start with the system that can run it.
