A dead 12-volt battery turns an ordinary parking lot into a waiting game: find another vehicle, reach both batteries with jumper cables, or call roadside assistance. The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 puts the other battery in a pack small enough to keep in the trunk. It is rated at 1,000 peak amps for gasoline engines up to 6.0 liters and diesel engines up to 3.0 liters, and its real appeal is independence when a compatible battery is too weak to crank the engine.

The GB40 is not a maintenance charger and it is not a fix for a worn-out battery. It is an emergency tool. That distinction makes it easier to decide whether the roughly $100 price makes sense: you are buying a compact way to get moving without needing a second car.

1000 peak amps cover many everyday vehicles

NOCO rates the GB40 for 12-volt lead-acid batteries and engines up to 6.0L gas or 3.0L diesel. That range covers many passenger cars, crossovers, motorcycles, boats, lawn equipment, and smaller trucks, but it is not the right model for every large diesel or oversized engine.

NOCO also says a fully charged GB40 can provide up to 20 jump starts. Treat that as a manufacturer maximum rather than a promise for every temperature, battery condition, or engine. The more practical habit is to check its charge periodically instead of discovering an empty jump pack when the vehicle battery is already dead.

Spark-proof and reverse-polarity protection reduce common mistakes

Jump starting still means working around a battery that can produce explosive gas and high current. The GB40 adds spark-proof connection technology and reverse-polarity protection, so the unit can flag an incorrect clamp connection rather than simply energizing it.

Those protections do not make the process careless-proof. NOCO's manual says to use the GB40 only with compatible 12-volt lead-acid batteries, never attempt to jump a damaged or frozen battery, work in a ventilated area, and wear eye protection. If you are unsure about the vehicle's battery chemistry or voltage, check the vehicle and battery documentation first.

It is compact enough to stay with the car

At about 7.72 by 3.16 by 1.71 inches and roughly 2.45 pounds, the GB40 is much easier to store than traditional lead-acid booster packs. NOCO rates the enclosure IP65 with its ports closed and adds a rubberized over-molded exterior, useful qualities for something that may spend months in a trunk or garage.

The included microfiber storage bag keeps the unit and cables together, but it is not a rigid protective case. Buyers who toss heavy tools into the same cargo area may want a separate hard or semi-rigid case.

The flashlight and USB output make it more than a one-job tool

A 100-lumen flashlight with multiple modes, including SOS and emergency strobe, is built into the pack. That matters because battery trouble often happens in a dark driveway or roadside shoulder where seeing terminals safely is part of the job.

The GB40 can also charge USB devices. NOCO's current specifications list a 24Wh internal lithium-ion battery, USB-C input, and 5V/2.1A USB output. It is not a high-capacity laptop power station, but topping up a phone during a roadside delay gives the battery pack a second practical use.

Buy it for self-reliance, not battery repair

The strongest case for the GB40 is simple: it can remove the need to position a second vehicle beside yours just to attempt a jump. That is especially useful for people who park alone, travel, keep a seasonal vehicle, or want a compact emergency kit in the trunk.

There are limits. The GB40 must itself be kept charged, its clamps still need reasonable access to the battery terminals, and a successful jump does not diagnose why the battery went flat. A battery that repeatedly needs help may need charging-system testing or replacement.

If your vehicle fits NOCO's 12-volt lead-acid and engine-size limits, the GB40 is the kind of gadget that can sit unused for months and still justify its space the first time you are stranded with a weak battery.
