Noctua NH-U12A Chromax Black: Two Fans Without a Second Tower
THE BUYING TAKE
Consider the black NH-U12A for its single-tower geometry and complete two-fan package. Confirm fit and fan-header requirements, then configure cooling around the actual computer.
Best for
PC builders who want an all-black single-tower cooler with two included PWM fans and have checked the exact case, board and socket arrangement.
The trade-off
The complete assembly is 158 mm tall and 1,220 g. Low-Noise Adaptors reduce maximum fan speed; optional appearance accessories are not included.

Noctua NH-U12A chromax.black
All black / single tower / two NF-A12x25 PWM chromax.black fans / standard retail package
Two fans on a CPU cooler do not necessarily mean two towers. The Noctua NH-U12A Chromax Black places its pair of 120 mm fans around a single heatsink, using a push-pull arrangement instead of spreading the assembly across two fin stacks. That distinction matters when you want a substantial air-cooling package without choosing a wider dual-tower design by default.
This assessment covers the all-black NH-U12A Chromax Black, including its two NF-A12x25 PWM Chromax Black fans. It is not the brown NH-U12A, the slimmer NH-U12S or a single fan sold separately. The useful question is whether the complete package fits the computer and the level of fan control you want to manage.
Understand what the single tower buys you
The heatsink uses seven heatpipes and an asymmetric layout. Noctua says this layout avoids overhanging the RAM slots on the listed mainstream Intel platforms and AMD AM4 and AM5. That gives tall memory modules a clearer route beside the cooler, but it is still worth checking the exact motherboard and the manufacturer's compatibility resources.
The complete cooler measures 158 mm high, 125 mm wide and 112 mm deep with its fans. Do not read “120 mm cooler” as a 120 mm height specification; that figure refers to the fan class. Compare the actual assembly dimensions with the case and the parts around the socket.
The second fan adds depth rather than another tower. Think about rear case-fan clearance, nearby heatsinks and access to cables before installing it. An assembly that fits within the case's quoted height can still make a particular build awkward to assemble or maintain.

Decide how the two fans will be controlled
Both supplied fans support PWM speed control. The package includes a four-pin splitter cable, allowing a suitable motherboard fan connection to control the pair together. Check the board's fan-header instructions and electrical limits rather than assuming that the presence of a splitter makes every connection appropriate.
Start by understanding the motherboard's fan-control options and the CPU temperatures under your own workloads. A fan curve is a choice about how speed changes as conditions change. It is not an instruction to choose the lowest possible speed regardless of the processor load.
Noctua also supplies Low-Noise Adaptors. Its feature description states that these reduce maximum fan speed from 2,000 to 1,700 rpm. This is an explicit limit on the available speed, not a free noise reduction with an identical cooling result under every workload. Assess temperatures after changing the configuration instead of judging the result only by ear.
Treat the supplied parts as an installation system
The retail package includes the SecuFirm2 mounting hardware and NT-H1 thermal compound. Use the current socket-specific instructions and check what is actually in the box. Mounting hardware can change over a product's sales life, so a broad socket-support statement should not replace checking the selected package.
Plan access to the mounting points before fastening the cooler and routing both fan cables. Keep wires clear of fan blades and other moving parts. If you are replacing an existing cooler, follow the processor and motherboard guidance for handling the socket and removing old thermal material.
With both fans, the assembly weighs 1,220 g. This is a part to install and transport thoughtfully, not something whose attachment should be judged by appearance alone. Consult Noctua's guidance if the finished computer will be shipped or moved frequently.
Choose the black package for practical reasons
The black coating, fans, clips and mounting parts give the chromax version a consistent appearance. Optional covers and colored anti-vibration pads can change that look, but they are separate accessories. They should not be mistaken for items included with the standard cooler.
Consider the NH-U12A Chromax Black when its single-tower geometry, included fans and documented control options suit the build. A simpler cooler may be enough for a less demanding system, and a smaller design may better suit a restricted case. Final temperature and sound depend on the processor, airflow, room conditions and settings. This article is based on documented specifications, not an original thermal or acoustic test.
