The frustrating part of a stubborn jar is often getting a useful grip on its lid. The blue-and-grey Otstar JO-B-DE puts rubber-lined openings and a longer handle between your hand and that small metal edge. It is a sensible tool to consider when ordinary twisting is awkward but you can still grip, turn and steady the jar. If you need the lid turned automatically or the container held for you, this manual opener does not provide that assistance.

Fit the lid before adding leverage

Otstar describes eight opening sizes across the two faces of the tool, intended for small and medium lids about 1–3 inches in diameter. There are four visible ring positions along the body, with different sizing on the reverse. Turning the opener over is therefore part of finding a suitable fit, not just a matter of which color faces upward.

The rubber lining contacts the lid while the extended handles give your hand something larger to hold. Those two details work together: a longer handle is useful only when the selected opening can grip the cap. Choose the position that fits rather than assuming the biggest ring is always the right choice for a larger jar.

This is the strongest buying reason for the Otstar. It changes the contact surface and gives you a lever without adding a motor, charger or installation. It can move from a small bottle cap to a compatible jar lid in the same kitchen session. The stated range remains a limit, however; measure a troublesome lid before expecting the circular openings to surround it.

The jar still needs a steady hand

The manufacturer's illustrated method shows one hand holding the container and the other gripping the opener around the lid. You squeeze and twist. The tool can improve the arrangement of your grip, but the work is still manual. That matters more than broad promises of “effortless” opening.

For someone buying it as a gift, ask what part of opening jars is actually difficult. If the main problem is a small, slippery lid, rubber contact and a longer handle may be relevant. If holding the jar steady or making a turning motion is the difficult part, this design leaves that requirement in place. A tool selected around that distinction is more useful than one selected only around the recipient's age.

The selected package is the single-opener option. It does not include the separate gripper pad or extra bottle opener shown in other bundles. If you want support under the jar as well as assistance at the lid, account for that separately rather than assuming the accessory arrives in this set.

Two hooks handle different openings

At the top, a shaped hook is intended to lift the edge of a suitable vacuum-sealed lid and release its seal. This is a different action from gripping the whole circumference. It explains how the tool can sometimes help with a lid too large for its rings without making the rings themselves any larger.

A second, straighter hook engages ring-pull tabs. That provides a handle for lifting the tab instead of having to get a fingernail underneath it. The distinction is useful in a kitchen where jars, screw caps and ring-pull food cans all appear regularly.

Do not read “can opener” here as a promise to cut around an ordinary sealed can. There is no rotating cutting wheel. Choose the hook that matches the opening method, keep the container controlled, and remember that a lifted can lid can still have a sharp edge. The extra functions are specific mechanical aids, not universal opening capability.

A drawer tool with a clear job

The body is polypropylene with thermoplastic rubber, and the listing puts its length at about nine inches. It is slim enough to consider for an ordinary utensil drawer or hook, without reserving counter space for an appliance. The rubber contact area should be kept clean so residue does not become part of the gripping surface.

Choose the JO-B-DE for compatible lids when a larger handle and rubber-lined fit address the task you struggle with. Its two hooks add separate uses, and the one-piece tool needs no power. Pass if you need automatic turning, one-handed container support or a conventional cutting can opener.
