OXO 5-Quart Colander: Measure the Sink Before Buying

THE BUYING TAKE

Buy for a measured fit and recurring draining need. A smaller colander can be the better choice when portions or storage are limited.

Best for
Pasta and produce prep in a sink and cupboard that comfortably accommodate the full bowl and handles.
The trade-off
Its full-size footprint needs space, and perforations do not replace fine mesh for every food.

Article summary

A roomy colander is useful only if it fits the place where you drain and store it. OXO's 11330900 pairs a stainless steel bowl with raised handles, but its footprint deserves attention before checkout.

A pot of pasta is ready, the sink is partly occupied, and the colander you planned to use has nowhere comfortable to sit. That familiar kitchen squeeze is a good reason to consider dimensions before capacity. OXO's five-quart stainless steel colander, model 11330900, offers room for everyday rinsing and draining. Whether it improves your routine depends on how that room fits your sink, cupboard and usual portion size.

Capacity is not the same as footprint

OXO identifies this model as five quarts, or 4.7 liters. That is a volume specification, not a promise about how many servings of every food it will hold. Long pasta, leafy vegetables and compact pieces occupy the space differently.

The manufacturer lists overall dimensions of approximately 11.03 by 12.41 by 6.2 inches. Use that as a starting point for checking the intended location, including the handles. Measure the space you actually have available rather than assuming a full-size kitchen sink leaves the same usable room when dishes are present.

Storage deserves the same check. A deep cupboard shelf may take the bowl but leave awkward access to the handles, while a crowded drawer may be the wrong home altogether. Compare the smaller three-quart option if your usual portions and available space do not justify this larger version.

Raised handles help you move the load

The elevated handles have non-slip grip surfaces. Their position and shape are the features to evaluate if you often move a bowl of wet produce or drained pasta between sink and counter.

Think about the load when the food is inside, not just the empty tool. More capacity can encourage larger batches, but it also gives you more to lift. Choose a batch size you can move comfortably, and keep the route to the landing surface clear.

A handle description does not make hot draining water or steam harmless. Follow the cooking method and use appropriate care around hot contents. The useful question is whether the handles suit your ordinary grip and workspace, not whether a marketing phrase can guarantee comfortable handling in every situation.

A perforated bowl serves a specific job

This is a perforated stainless steel colander, intended for tasks such as rinsing vegetables and draining pasta. Its construction is visibly different from a fine-mesh sieve. Choose the tool around the size and character of what you need to retain.

If the main task is catching tiny seeds, filtering a sauce or handling very small grains, do not assume this bowl replaces a finer strainer. Check the required texture and retention before buying. One large draining tool is not automatically a complete straining kit.

OXO describes raised feet that support the bowl in the sink or on a counter. They are useful for setting it down, but they do not eliminate the need for a clean, suitable landing area. Clear the sink and check that the bowl sits securely before arranging the rest of the work.

Nesting helps only when the bowls fit

OXO says the colander nests with its stainless steel mixing bowls. That can simplify storage when you already have a compatible arrangement, but it should not become an assumption that every bowl in your kitchen will fit neatly around it.

Before adding another purchase, check the bowls you own and how often you need them at the same time. Stacking saves space only if taking out the colander remains convenient. If it ends up buried under frequently used equipment, a smaller or differently shaped tool may work better.

Choose model 11330900 when its capacity, handles and footprint solve a real rinsing or draining problem. Confirm the five-quart variant and current delivered price, and compare any older OXO version by its exact model details. A well-fitting colander can earn a regular place beside the sink; extra capacity alone is not enough reason to give it that space.
