A streaming player earns its place when it solves something your current television setup makes awkward. For the Roku Ultra, that can be a wired connection at the TV, a rechargeable remote with visible buttons, or a separate interface for the streaming services you use. Start with that need before buying another box for the cabinet.
This article covers the black US Roku Ultra 4850R, the 2024 model supplied with the second-edition Voice Remote Pro. It is a separate HDMI player, rather than a Streaming Stick or the Ultra LT. Its features matter most when the television, connection and viewing routine can make use of them.
Decide how the player will reach your network
The Ultra offers dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and a built-in Ethernet connection. Having both is a buying reason if you want to choose the connection at your television rather than arrange the room around a wireless-only device.
For a wired setup, consider the cable route from the network equipment to the player. A socket on the box does not make that route disappear. Think about where the cable will run, where the player will sit and whether the arrangement remains convenient when you need to reach it.
Roku specifies the Ethernet port as 10/100, not gigabit. That detail prevents treating the wired label as a promise that it must outperform every wireless arrangement. Choose the option that suits your actual network and placement; this article does not measure throughput or guarantee a buffer-free stream.
The separate box also needs its power adapter and an HDMI connection. Plan those alongside the network before deciding that the installation will fit behind or beside the television.
Make the remote part of the buying decision
The included Voice Remote Pro has backlit buttons and a rechargeable battery. Those are a second practical reason to consider the Ultra if finding controls in a dim room and managing disposable remote batteries are recurring annoyances.
The supplier's remote picture shows the illuminated controls. It illustrates the feature rather than a measured result from our own use. Think about the buttons you reach for during an evening, instead of judging the player only by picture-format logos.
The remote supports button-operated voice commands and optional hands-free voice. Roku's instructions describe enabling the latter with the slider on the remote's side. You can decide whether speaking without holding the remote fits your household, while retaining a deliberate button-based way to issue commands.
Rechargeable still means remembering to recharge. Give the supplied USB-C remote cable a sensible place so it is available when needed. The remote's charging cable and the player's power adapter do different jobs; this is not a battery-powered streaming box.

Check the television and audio chain
The Ultra supports 4K playback and formats including Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos. These capabilities can suit a compatible viewing setup, but buying the player alone does not create the complete result.
Roku requires a compatible HDMI input with HDCP 2.2 for 4K streaming. The television and the content must also support the picture format you intend to watch. For Atmos, compatible audio equipment matters as well.
Check the equipment you already own before paying for capabilities you will not use. If your main purpose is reaching familiar apps on an HD television, decide whether the network choices and remote justify the purchase on their own. A longer format list should not replace that question.
The USB port supports local media playback with documented file formats. It may be useful for an existing collection, but it is not a promise that every file, codec or drive will work. Check the relevant format requirements if that is an important reason for buying.
Separate the hardware purchase from watching costs
Setup includes connecting the player and linking it to a Roku account. Roku states that account creation and device activation are free. That is separate from deciding which paid streaming services or subscriptions you want.
List the services you actually watch and check their current availability and terms. A logo on packaging or a supplied remote shortcut does not mean the subscription is included with the player.
Choose the Ultra when its wired-or-wireless arrangement and included remote answer clear needs at your television. If your current setup already handles those jobs comfortably, another streaming box may add little. The useful purchase is a better-fitting routine, with compatible equipment and a clear plan for the services you use.
