simplehuman KT1116 Sink Caddy: Ventilated Storage Keeps Sponges Off the Counter

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose the simplehuman KT1116 when brushes and sponges repeatedly clutter the sink rim and a smooth basin wall with suitable ledge clearance can support an in-sink organizer; choose a slim tray or countertop caddy when basin space or reliable suction is the bigger concern.

Best for
Kitchens with a smooth sink wall, suitable ledge clearance and a daily mix of sponges plus a longer dish brush that need a ventilated, in-basin home.
The trade-off
The caddy occupies space inside the basin, suction performance depends on surface and clearance, and independent testing found that unsuitable counter geometry could cause the cups to release; ventilation also does not replace rinsing, cleaning or sponge replacement.

Article summary

The simplehuman KT1116 Sink Caddy uses four suction cups, a wire ledge hanger, ventilated sponge compartments and a pop-out silicone brush holder to move wet tools off the counter, but its grip depends on a smooth sink wall and suitable ledge clearance.

The sponge finishes the dishes wet, then often lands on the counter rim or at the bottom of the basin. Neither spot helps it drain, and a long dish brush can make the same small area feel even more crowded. The simplehuman KT1116 Sink Caddy moves both tools onto the inside wall of the sink. Four suction cups and a wire ledge hanger support the brushed-steel organizer, while separate ventilated sections hold sponges and a brush close to the washing zone.

That arrangement has a real condition: the caddy must suit the sink. Its value depends on a smooth mounting surface and enough clearance for the wire hanger to sit correctly. Independent testing by Food & Wine found that unsuitable counter clearance could make the suction cups detach. This is a fit-dependent organizer, not a universal answer for every basin.

Two mounting points share the load

Simplehuman does not ask the suction cups to do all the work. The official product page specifies four cups plus a wire hanger that rests on the sink ledge. Together they are intended to form a secure, non-slip grip, keeping wet tools off the counter without requiring drilled hardware or a freestanding tray.

The distinction matters during ordinary dishwashing. A sponge can be returned to the same open compartment with one hand, and the brush stays inside the sink rather than dripping across the worktop. The caddy also leaves the counter rim available for soap or food preparation. It does occupy some basin space, however, so a small sink may feel tighter even when the surrounding counter looks calmer.

Ventilation gives wet tools somewhere to drain

Storage alone would only move the puddle. KT1116 uses numerous ventilation holes and elevated sponge compartments to let water leave and air circulate around damp tools. The manufacturer describes this layout as faster drying; the practical benefit is a defined place where a sponge can drain back into the sink instead of sitting flat in collected water.

Airflow is not the same as sanitizing. Food residue still needs to be rinsed away, the caddy still needs regular cleaning, and a worn sponge still needs replacement. The design improves drainage conditions; it does not make a dirty sponge hygienic by itself.

The pop-out holder makes room for a longer brush

The left compartment has a silicone brush holder that extends downward to support longer handles. Amazon's exact listing documents that pop-out feature, and the product image shows a tall dish brush held separately from the sponge bays. This is more useful than one undivided basket when the daily kit includes both a brush and several flat scrubbers.

It is less useful for someone who keeps only one small sponge or wants to store a soap bottle as well. In that case, a slimmer caddy or a simple ledge tray may consume less sink space. The KT1116 earns its larger standard format when separating tools is part of the problem.

Check the sink wall before choosing an in-basin caddy

Start with the mounting area, not the product photo. The cups need a clean, smooth surface to seal; Simplehuman's own FAQ offers petroleum jelly or optional suction-cup stickers when a surface is not smooth. Also confirm that the wire hanger can rest on the ledge without being forced out by thick trim, an overhanging counter or a sink accessory.

Choose the simplehuman KT1116 when brushes and sponges repeatedly clutter the rim, the basin has a suitable mounting area, and faster drainage is more valuable than preserving every inch inside the sink. Skip it when the wall is textured, the ledge lacks clearance, or a narrow basin cannot spare the footprint. When the fit is right, its best qualities work together: two-part support keeps the station in reach, ventilated compartments let wet tools drain, and the extending brush holder separates a long handle from the sponges beside it.
