Imagine the moment you actually press play: the player in your hand, the sound around you and the connection available. The black Sony WH-CH720N and standard black-and-silver Koss Porta Pro can both be your everyday headphones, but they ask for different routines before the first track starts.
Sony offers Bluetooth, active noise canceling and an included analog cable. The Porta Pro uses a conventional wired connection and a folding, open-air frame. The useful choice is how you want to listen in your particular setting, rather than which design has the longest feature list.
Choose what happens to surrounding sound
The WH-CH720N is a closed, over-ear design with active noise canceling. That gives you a reason to consider it when reducing surrounding noise is an important part of the purchase. Its Ambient Sound function provides another operating choice; neither mode establishes that every sound disappears.
The Porta Pro has open-air, on-ear cushions. Its design lets room sound through instead of using active cancellation. That can suit a quieter listening place, but it is a weak starting point if the main problem is nearby conversation or a noisy journey.
Include other people in that decision. Open headphones are a poor choice when keeping music private beside someone else is essential. Choose around the place you will use them, rather than expecting a small folding frame to provide isolation it was not designed to offer.
This comparison supplies no matched isolation measurements or listening test. The distinction is the documented design and available modes, not a claim that one pair sounds better on every recording.
Check the cable before calling either simple
The standard Porta Pro has a four-foot, dual-entry cable with a 3.5 mm plug. With a suitable headphone output, that avoids Bluetooth pairing and a headphone charging routine. A phone without that socket still needs a compatible audio adapter.
Sony is also usable with its supplied headphone cable. Its help guide makes the boundary clear: music can play with the headset turned off, but noise canceling cannot. Turn the headset on if you want powered noise canceling while using that cable.
Connecting Sony's cable disables Bluetooth. In that mode, volume and play/pause are controlled on the playback device rather than through the headset's corresponding buttons. A wired fallback is useful, but it does not preserve every part of the wireless control routine.
For calls over Sony's analog cable, the help guide directs you to speak through the phone's microphone. If calls are central to the purchase, distinguish that arrangement from Bluetooth use before deciding that an available cable solves everything.
Compare where the cushions sit
Sony's cushions surround the ears. The Porta Pro's foam pads rest on them, with an adjustable metal band and Comfort Zone pressure switches. Those are different contact arrangements, not a universal comfort ranking.
Someone who dislikes pressure on the outer ear has a concrete reason to assess the Porta Pro carefully. Someone who dislikes larger earcups may value the compact frame. Try the relevant style when possible, especially if long sessions are the reason for buying.
The Porta Pro folds for packing. That is useful when the headphones must fit into a bag between listening sessions. Keep the attached cable with the folded frame in mind, too; portability includes how you put the pair away, not just how it looks open on a table.

Sony rates Bluetooth music playback at up to 35 hours with noise canceling on, or 50 with it off. These are manufacturer maximums, and its guide says settings and conditions affect runtime. Powered features still require charging even though passive cable listening is available.
The Porta Pro removes that headphone-battery task, but its source device still needs power and a usable output. Include any necessary adapter in the setup you intend to carry.
Choose Sony when Bluetooth and powered cancellation answer a real need, and learn the cable mode's limits. Choose the standard Porta Pro when open, on-ear listening and a folding wired frame suit the destination. Start with the connection and room you actually have.
THE CHOICES
Which one fits your job?
01Sony WHCH720N/B — WH-CH720N / Black
WHY CONSIDER IT
Choose Bluetooth and powered noise canceling when those modes serve your regular listening place.
Keep a supplied analog cable as a usable listening route, including passive operation when the headset is off.
THE LIMITS
Noise canceling requires power and is not a promise of complete silence.
Cable mode disables Bluetooth and the headset's volume and playback buttons; analog calls use the phone microphone.
Over-ear fit and battery maintenance still need consideration.
02Koss Porta Pro — Black; Silver / On-Ear Headphone; standard wired single pair
WHY CONSIDER IT
Listen from a suitable analog output without Bluetooth pairing or a headphone battery to charge.
Fold the compact frame for transport and adjust the on-ear pressure setting.
THE LIMITS
The open design is a poor choice for isolation or keeping music private beside someone else.
A source without a suitable headphone socket needs a compatible audio adapter.
On-ear foam cushions and pressure adjustment do not guarantee personal comfort.
