SteelSeries Apex 9 Mini: Trade Dedicated Keys for More Mouse Space
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose the 60% layout deliberately and compare same-model prices; do not buy it expecting Apex Pro features or universal hot-swap support.
Best for
Mouse-heavy setups where reclaimed width matters more than dedicated navigation and function keys.
The trade-off
Secondary layers take practice; OptiPoint replacement compatibility is limited. The checked marketplace price warrants careful comparison.

Article summary
Apex 9 Mini frees desk width with a 60% layout and offers two OptiPoint actuation settings. The important tradeoffs are secondary-key habits, restricted switch compatibility and the selected seller's price.

A mouse can run out of room long before a desk looks full. The keyboard's number pad, navigation block and spare width may occupy the part of the surface where your hand wants to move. The SteelSeries Apex 9 Mini addresses that physical problem with a 60% layout.
It is a useful trade only if you can live with what disappears. This black US-layout 64837 is the wired Apex 9 Mini, not the Apex Pro Mini and not the larger Apex 9 TKL. Similar branding should not hide the different layouts and switch systems.
Rehearse the missing keys
Before buying, list the keys you use outside a game's main controls. Arrow keys, function keys, Delete and navigation commands can matter more during ordinary work than during a short gaming demonstration. On a compact board, some of those actions move to secondary combinations.
SteelSeries prints secondary functions on the keycaps. That helps with discovery, but reading a label is not the same as having a dedicated key under a familiar finger. Imagine changing a file name, editing a paragraph or using your usual application shortcuts.
If those tasks dominate the day, a slightly larger layout may be a better compromise. If the keyboard mostly serves a mouse-heavy gaming setup, reclaiming width may be worth learning the combinations. Judge the layout by your whole routine rather than the cleanest photograph of the desk.
Understand the two actuation settings
OptiPoint optical switches provide a choice between 1 mm and 1.5 mm actuation. This is a two-setting system, not the broad magnetic-switch adjustment associated with other models. Confirm the current configuration instructions and software support for the exact Mini.
Begin with one setting and use familiar tasks. If you notice unwanted key registrations, consider whether a deeper setting suits your typing better. A shallower trigger is not automatically the best choice simply because the product is sold for games.
Do not convert manufacturer response-time language into a promise of better results. Keyboard reporting, game behavior and your own input all contribute to the experience. A setting is useful when it is predictable under your fingers, not when its number looks smallest on a comparison chart.

Hot-swap has a specific boundary
SteelSeries support states that Apex 9 replacement compatibility is with its OptiPoint switches. The removable-switch design should therefore not be treated as an invitation to buy a random bag of mechanical or optical switches.
This matters if future customization is part of your budget. Check the availability of a supported replacement before assuming you can change the feel later. Keycap compatibility and switch compatibility are separate questions, even when both are advertised as customization.
If you intend to remove switches, follow the manufacturer procedure and use an appropriate tool. Do not make modifications the first test of a newly purchased keyboard. Establish that the stock device works correctly and that the compact layout suits you before spending money on changes.
Check what the current price buys
The Newegg US New offer checked on November 5, 2026 was $179.19 from Zyngear. This is a marketplace price observation, not a sale claim. Compare other current offers for the same black US Mini, including delivery and return conditions.
There is particular reason to compare carefully: SteelSeries' original 2022 announcement listed a lower launch MSRP for the Mini. That historical figure is not a current offer, but it means the checked listing should not be promoted as an obvious value without further comparison.
Choose Apex 9 Mini when the reclaimed mouse space and straightforward optical actuation choices fit a known need. Skip the selected offer if a better-priced matching product is available, or choose a larger layout if dedicated keys are essential. The compact form should solve a desk problem rather than create a daily navigation problem.
