SUIZAN SR-001 9.5-Inch Ryoba Pull Saw: Rip and Crosscut

THE BUYING TAKE

A practical Ryoba for woodworking projects that need both rip cuts and crosscuts. The two edges share one handle, and the dedicated SRRP-001 blade provides a replacement path when the teeth become dull.

Best for
Home woodworkers cutting pieces both along and across the grain by hand, with space to secure the work and use a controlled pull stroke.
The trade-off
The impulse-hardened teeth are replaced rather than resharpened. Avoid forcing or twisting the blade; allow for work support, practice and rust-preventive care. It is not for metal, and very hard wood or knots can damage the blade.

Cut a board to length, then cut a narrower strip along its grain: those are different jobs for a saw's teeth. The SUIZAN SR-001 puts a crosscut edge and a rip edge on the same 240 mm blade. Turn the saw over to switch between them. That is the appeal of this 9.5-inch Ryoba for a home woodworker making a project by hand.

Choose an edge by grain direction

Across the grain, use the crosscut edge; along it, use the rip edge. Choose from the grain in the board, regardless of which way the board lies on the bench. The two edges address the direction of the cut; they do not set the line for you.

If your usual work is simply trimming boards to length, ask how often you would use the rip edge. The SR-001 has a clearer purpose when you also make cuts along the grain. Someone who already owns suitable separate saws may gain convenience from the combined format, but does not gain a new cutting function.

The complete SR-001 has a Japanese-steel blade and a wrapped wooden handle. Its 240 mm blade and handle are sold together as the saw; SRRP-001 is the separately sold replacement blade. Check that distinction when buying, since a blade-only listing is useful only if you have the matching handle.

Make room for a controlled pull stroke

This Japanese pull saw cuts as you draw it toward you. SUIZAN warns that forcing the push stroke can damage the blade. Allow enough working room for your hand and the handle to travel through that pulling motion, especially when positioning a board near a wall or other obstruction.

Secure the wood and check that the blade is firmly attached before starting. A thin blade needs a controlled path through the cut: excessive force, bending or twisting can damage it. Do not use a blade that is already bent or distorted. These are working habits to account for when deciding whether a pull saw fits your projects.

The manufacturer's specifications list a 0.5 mm blade thickness and a 0.8 mm kerf. Kerf is the width of material removed by the cut, so the two measurements describe different things. When laying out pieces, allow for the cut width between them; do not treat the thickness of the steel as the full cutting allowance.

If keeping the cut straight proves difficult, SUIZAN recommends a saw guide or miter box and a shallow starting cut to help stabilize the blade. That makes this a reasonable tool to learn with if you are willing to set up the work and practice. The two cutting edges do not remove that learning step.

Keep the handle when the blade wears out

SUIZAN sells SRRP-001 specifically for this 240 mm Ryoba. Replacing its blade lets you retain a serviceable handle, a useful reason to choose a saw with a dedicated replacement part. The blade is purchased separately, and the brand's replacement blades are model-specific.

Its teeth also determine the maintenance choice. SUIZAN says its impulse-hardened blades cannot be resharpened. Once dull, replace the blade. A woodworker who wants to sharpen the same teeth repeatedly should choose a saw designed for that approach.

Between uses, remove wood chips, wipe away moisture and apply a thin coat of rust-preventive oil before dry storage. Material choice matters too: this is a woodworking saw, and the instructions warn against metal. Very hard wood or knots can damage the blade, so match the saw to the stock rather than assuming every piece of wood presents the same job.

The SR-001 makes sense as a single hand saw for projects with mixed grain directions, especially if you value a defined replacement-blade option. Before buying, picture the work on your own bench: the stock held securely, a clear pulling path and somewhere dry to put the saw afterward. Those conditions make its two-edge convenience useful in practice.
