Synology DS223j: Plan the Drives and a Separate Backup
THE BUYING TAKE
Consider it for straightforward home storage, after budgeting for drives and testing a separate restore.
Best for
Household file sharing and backup over a wired 1GbE network.
The trade-off
Drives cost extra. Mirroring reduces usable capacity, and the network connection is 1GbE.

Buying a two-bay NAS starts with deciding where your files will live if a drive fails or a file disappears. The Synology DiskStation DS223j is a white two-bay enclosure sold here without drives. It can become a shared place for household documents, a photo library or computer backups, but the enclosure is only one part of the plan. Budget for compatible drives and decide where a separate copy will go before you move the only copy of anything important.
Choose the drives and usable capacity together
Make a rough inventory of the data you want to move and how quickly it grows. A folder of current documents behaves differently from years of original photos or a set of computer backups that keeps older versions. Leave some space for growth and choose drive models using Synology's compatibility information for this exact enclosure. Check the condition of any drives you intend to reuse. Confirm whether they contain data you still need before allowing setup to initialize them.
A two-drive configuration can be set up for one-drive fault tolerance with a suitable storage pool such as RAID 1 or a compatible Synology Hybrid RAID arrangement. Two same-size drives in a mirrored pool do not give you twice the capacity of one drive. The available space is roughly one drive's capacity before formatting and overhead. If more space is the priority, compare the usable capacity of the options and decide what failure you can tolerate before selecting the pool type. Save that choice with the drive model numbers so it is easier to understand later.
Give shared files and backups separate jobs
A shared folder is where people work with files. Sync can make a current copy available on another device, and it can also carry a deletion or unwanted edit to that device depending on the setup. A backup should give you a way to recover a past version or a copy stored somewhere else. Test those jobs separately. Put a sample folder on the NAS, edit a file, and check what appears on the other computer. Then try restoring the earlier version from your chosen backup.
Synology lists Btrfs support and Snapshot Replication for the DS223j with supported DSM versions. Confirm the installed version and storage settings before counting on snapshots. A snapshot can help with a file change, while a separate copy can help if the entire NAS is unavailable. Choose a separate destination for files you cannot replace. Start by restoring one folder to a new location so you can check the result without overwriting the working copy.

Check the network and the people who need access
The DS223j has one 1GbE port. Plan an Ethernet connection to your router or switch. For the first big transfer, time a representative folder containing both large files and small ones. Treat the result as an estimate for your network and computers. Wi-Fi on the sending device, file sizes and other traffic can all change what you see. An installation that regularly moves large project folders may call for a different network and NAS specification.
Create a separate account for each person who needs access. Decide who can edit the shared library and who only needs to read it. Test those permissions on a normal account before moving private documents. If you need access away from home, review the vendor's supported options and choose one you can maintain. Local access is enough to prove that the basic setup works.
Buy for the workload you actually have
The DS223j is a reasonable starting point for ordinary household file sharing and a backup destination when a wired 1GbE connection is appropriate. It makes more sense when the cost includes drives and a separate recovery copy. If the project depends on faster network links or heavier applications, confirm those requirements before committing. For a straightforward setup, make the first successful file restore part of the installation.
