Two pencil marks at opposite ends of a sheet of plywood still leave the middle unmarked. Joining them with a short straightedge means working in stages; a chalk line can transfer the reference across the span. The Tajima CR301JF Chalk-Rite Jam Free is a manual reel for that job, with an Extra Bold braided line, a folding winding handle, and a refillable black ABS case.

The basic action is simple: a chalk-coated line is held taut along the chosen path, lifted slightly from the surface, then released so it snaps back and deposits powder. That leaves a guide to follow while the reel can be moved aside. Measuring the endpoints and checking the layout still come first.

Choose the line your layout needs

Tajima lists this version with a 1.0 mm Extra Bold line and a nominal length of 100 feet, also labeled 30 meters. That length gives you room to span a sheet or a larger layout area without moving a short ruler along the whole route. It is the available line length, so you still need suitable places to establish both ends.

Across unfinished sheet material, a bold reference can be easy to pick out while arranging a row of components or preparing a rough cutting guide. Tajima calls this configuration Extra Bold. The 1.0 mm label identifies that line class; it is not a promise that the tool places a mark accurately to within a millimeter.

For a cut or installation that depends on reading a very fine edge, consider how much space a bold mark occupies. A finer marking tool may suit that task better. Choosing the CR301JF makes more sense when a readily visible long reference matters more than the smallest possible mark.

Consider what happens between marks

Changing work positions can mean letting out more line or winding some back in. The CR301JF uses a five-gear winding mechanism and a folding handle for manual retrieval. You turn the handle when shortening the exposed line or putting it away. Folded against the front of the body, the handle stays close to the case for storage.

The large refill opening is another practical feature of the ABS case. The cap comes away to expose the neck shown in the detail photo, and Tajima says the port also provides access for felt replacement. Replenishing the chalk and reaching that service point both involve this opening, so its design matters beyond the first time you fill the reel.

Tajima lists a compatible folding handle assembly, gear case and planetary gears, and replacement cap for the CR301JF. If one of those components needs attention, you can look up the corresponding part for this model. Check its availability and fitting requirements before ordering. Keeping the model number with your tools helps make that search more straightforward later.

Match the powder to the surface

The reel is only one part of the marking setup. Choose chalk with guidance suited to the material and the kind of mark the job allows. A reference that will be covered later raises different questions from a mark on a surface that will remain visible. Read the powder maker's instructions and check any removal claim before assuming the line will clean off.

Plan the chalk supply at the same time as the tool. Check the selected seller's package contents instead of assuming a bottle accompanies the reel. If the surface finish matters, a small trial on matching scrap can help you judge the mark before committing it to the workpiece.

For occasional short marks, a pencil and straightedge may already cover the need. The CR301JF is easier to justify when the next project repeatedly calls for references across a sheet or a larger layout area. Keep it with the measuring tools and suitable chalk, ready for the point when established positions need to become a line you can follow.
