AirFly Pro 2 Bluetooth Adapter: Seatback Audio Unwired

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose it if you travel often with Bluetooth headphones and want one compact adapter for seatback screens plus occasional AUX-in use; skip it if a simple 3.5mm cable already covers your trips.

Best for
Frequent flyers who prefer their own Bluetooth headphones, especially couples or families who may share one in-flight screen, plus owners of AUX-only cars or speakers.
The trade-off
It costs more than a simple cable, adds another battery to charge, the standard version does not include the Deluxe model’s airline twin-prong adapter, and Bluetooth latency or compatibility can vary with the source and headphones.

Most airline seatback screens still expect a 3.5mm plug, while many travelers now carry Bluetooth-only earbuds or headphones. The Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 bridges that mismatch: plug it into the headphone jack, pair your wireless headphones, and the screen’s audio travels over Bluetooth instead of a cable.

Twelve South currently lists AirFly Pro 2 at $59.99. The buying question is whether you encounter wired audio often enough to make one small adapter worth keeping in your travel kit.

Turn the seatback jack into a Bluetooth source

In TX mode, AirFly Pro 2 takes audio from a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and sends it to Bluetooth headphones. That makes airplane screens the obvious use case, but the same idea works with treadmills, older game systems, and other equipment that still exposes a headphone output.

The benefit is not better headphones by itself. It is getting to use the pair you already chose for comfort, fit, and noise cancellation instead of switching to a separate wired set just because the source is old-fashioned.

Compatibility is broad because Twelve South supports Bluetooth headphones across brands, not only AirPods. The adapter also gives you physical volume controls, mute, and separate pairing buttons, so the most common controls stay on the device rather than requiring an app.

Two people can listen to the same screen

AirFly Pro 2 can pair two sets of wireless headphones to one audio source. Separate Pair 1 and Pair 2 buttons keep that feature easy to understand.

That matters for couples, parents and kids, or anyone sharing a movie on one airplane screen. Instead of packing a wired splitter plus two compatible cables, each person can keep using their own Bluetooth headphones.

There is still a little setup to do. Twelve South says the adapter reconnects to the last two paired devices, with the first connection taking roughly 15 seconds and the second around 35 seconds. Pair it before boarding if you want less button-pressing after you sit down.

The battery is sized for long travel days

Twelve South rates AirFly Pro 2 for more than 25 hours of battery life and says a full USB-C charge takes within two hours. The adapter weighs 16.5 grams and measures 56.6 by 29 by 11.2 millimeters, so it adds very little bulk to a headphone pouch.

Those numbers are important because a travel accessory becomes annoying if it needs more attention than the problem it solves. A charge that covers a long-haul flight plus airport time makes AirFly easier to treat like part of the headphone kit instead of another device that needs topping up mid-trip.

The standard AirFly Pro 2 package does not include the International Airline Adapter found in the Deluxe version. If you regularly fly aircraft that still use dual-prong airline audio sockets, check whether you need that extra adapter before buying.

Receiver mode gives it a job after the flight

The side switch changes AirFly Pro 2 from TX to RX mode. In RX mode, your phone sends Bluetooth audio to AirFly, which then feeds a car stereo, powered speaker, or other AUX-in device through its 3.5mm plug.

That second mode helps justify the purchase if you own an older car or home audio system without Bluetooth. One tiny adapter can solve both directions of the wired-versus-wireless problem instead of living in a drawer between flights.

Know when a wire is still the simpler answer

Bluetooth adds another radio link to the audio chain. AirFly Pro 2 supports modern aptX codecs, including low-latency options, but the result still depends on the source and the headphones you pair with it. People who are very sensitive to lip-sync delay should not assume every seatback screen and headset combination will behave exactly the same.

You also have one more battery-powered device to remember and charge. If you fly once a year, already carry headphones with a detachable 3.5mm cable, or rarely use AUX-only equipment, a simple wire may solve the same problem for less money.

AirFly Pro 2 makes the strongest case for frequent travelers who already prefer Bluetooth headphones, especially when two people may share one screen. It is a small convenience tool, but it removes a very specific annoyance: arriving with the headphones you actually want to wear and discovering the screen still expects a cable.
