Umbra UDry Dish Rack and Mat: Move the Rack, Fold the Mat

THE BUYING TAKE

Consider UDry for movable plate support beside a flat drying area, with a mat that folds around the rack afterward. Allow for its open footprint and the separate care of fabric and plastic.

Best for
People who wash mixed batches of plates, bowls and utensils, want to change the rack's position on the mat, and have room to store the set between uses.
The trade-off
Plan for roughly 24 by 18 inches of counter space, with a 23/24-inch length conflict in the source specifications. Dish fit and folded storage space need checking; the rack is top-rack dishwasher safe, while the mat is machine washable.

Plates standing in slots and a bowl resting beside them need different kinds of space. The Umbra UDry dish rack and mat puts both on one countertop surface. Its removable plastic rack can sit at the side or in the middle of the microfiber mat, so the arrangement can change with the dishes you have just washed.

This is the Linen version. That label describes the pale color; the mat itself is microfiber, supplied with one molded plastic rack. The dishes and cutlery in its product pictures are display props.

Move the rack to suit the dishes

Umbra's supplied product description says the rack slides in and out and secures at the middle or side of the mat. Moving it toward one side leaves a larger uninterrupted patch of fabric beside it. That can be useful for a bowl or other item whose shape does not belong between plate slots.

The rack is the reason to consider this combination when a plain drying mat leaves you wanting plate slots. Suitable plates can stand between its ribs, while a mug or utensils rest on exposed fabric. If most of your washing consists of items that already rest flat, consider how often you would use those slots.

Judge the arrangement by your dishes' shapes. A thick plate rim needs to sit securely between the ribs, and a broad bowl needs enough clear mat around it.

Plan for the mat while it is spread out

Umbra describes the microfiber mat as absorbing water from the dishes. The fabric also needs its own washing and drying alongside care of the removable rack.

Allow for its working footprint before deciding where it will go. This version is listed as 24 by 18 inches, but Umbra's Linen dimension image labels it 23 by 18 inches. Those sources do not agree on length. Use about 24 by 18 inches as a planning allowance and confirm the supplied item's dimensions if the fit beside your sink is tight.

The combination is designed to sit on the counter. If you need water directed into the sink through a drain spout, choose a design that specifically provides that feature. UDry's absorbent mat serves a different arrangement.

Wash the two pieces separately

Slide the rack out of the mat when it needs cleaning. The manufacturer's supplied listing specifies that the plastic rack is dishwasher safe on the top rack only. That instruction applies to the removable plastic piece.

The mat is machine washable. Keep that route separate from washing the rack; the fabric is not covered by the rack's dishwasher instruction. Before choosing washing or drying settings, check the applicable care instructions for the item you receive.

Fold the mat around the rack

Umbra shows the mat folded around the rack for storage in a drawer. The fabric becomes the outer wrap of the bundle, keeping the two parts together after the dishes are put away. Packing them together also means the rack is in the same place when you next unfold the mat.

Check a prospective drawer or cupboard as well as the counter. A folded arrangement can still be too long for a particular compartment, so leave room for the rack and the fabric wrapped around it. As a practical care step, let the mat dry before enclosing it for storage.

For a kitchen that dries dishes in batches, the useful cycle is clear: position the rack for the load, clean each component by its own instructions, and put both away together. That cycle needs time for the fabric to dry. If the drying area stays occupied all day, folding may offer less value; the slots and mat layout would then have to justify the set on their own.
