Vitamix 5200 Blender: Manual Control for Large Batches
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose the Vitamix 5200 when you want a large manual-control blender for thick or batch recipes; skip it for preset programs or dishwasher cleanup.
Best for
Cooks who regularly make soups, sauces, frozen drinks, thick mixtures, or several smoothie servings and prefer direct speed control over automatic programs.
The trade-off
It stands 20.5 inches tall, has no preset programs or pulse control, and its container, lid, and lid plug should not go in the dishwasher. Hot liquids require the manual's low-speed, secured-lid safety routine.

The 64-ounce 5200 pairs a simple speed dial with a tamper for thick blends. Its tall jar and hand-wash-only care matter as much as the capacity.

A big blender earns its counter space only if it makes the jobs you actually do easier. The Vitamix 5200 takes a deliberately old-school approach: a tall 64-ounce container, a variable-speed dial, a High switch, and a tamper instead of preset buttons. That makes it a strong fit for cooks who want direct control over large or thick blends, but the same simplicity means you have to manage speed, cleaning, storage height, and hot ingredients yourself.
Check the height before you claim counter space
The 5200 is a full-size machine, not a compact smoothie blender. Vitamix lists it at 20.5 inches tall with the classic 64-ounce container installed. That height matters more than the footprint if you plan to leave it under wall cabinets. Measure the clearance where it will actually live, including enough room to lift the lid and container.
The large container is useful when soup, sauce, frozen drinks, or several smoothie servings are normal jobs. It can also handle smaller batches, but buying a 64-ounce machine only for one quick drink can leave you storing more blender than you need. If your routine is almost entirely single-serve, compare the space commitment before paying for capacity you rarely use.
The dial keeps you in control
There is no menu of automatic programs on the 5200. You start on Variable 1, increase through the speed dial, and use the High setting when the recipe calls for maximum speed. That tactile control is the point: you decide when to ramp up, when to stop, and how much texture to leave.
Thick mixtures add another manual step. The included tamper is designed to push ingredients into circulation through the lid-plug opening while the lid stays secured. Vitamix says the splash disk and lid keep the tamper from reaching the blades when it is used correctly. For dense blends such as nut butter or frozen mixtures, that can be more useful than repeatedly stopping to scrape the sides.
If you would rather press a smoothie button and walk away, a model with automatic programs is a better match. The 5200 makes more sense when manual control feels like flexibility rather than extra work.

Cleaning is quick, but the container is not a dishwasher shortcut
The familiar cleaning routine is simple: warm water, a little dish soap, then run the machine from low speed up to High before rinsing. That avoids taking the blade assembly apart for normal cleaning.
But the owner's manual specifically says not to put the container, lid, or lid plug in the dishwasher. That is an important ownership detail if dishwasher cleanup is part of your usual kitchen routine. The motor base also needs hand wiping with the power disconnected and must not be immersed in water.
The same distinction applies to the tamper and moving parts: easy routine cleaning does not mean the whole system can be treated like a dishwasher-safe pitcher.
Hot blends need the safety routine, not improvisation
The 5200 can process hot ingredients, but the manual gives clear limits. Keep the lid secured, do not fill the container to maximum capacity with hot liquids, begin on Variable 1, and keep exposed skin away from the lid opening because escaping steam or splashes can burn.
The manual also says not to put hands or utensils into the container while the machine is running or while the container is still on the base. For thick mixtures, use the supplied tamper only through the lid opening as directed. When making nut butters or other oil-based foods, Vitamix warns against running longer than one minute after the mixture begins circulating because of overheating risk.
These are not small-print details. They are part of deciding whether a powerful manual blender fits the way you cook.
Buy it for capacity and control, not for automation
The 5200 works best for someone who regularly makes larger batches, thick blends, soups, sauces, or frozen mixtures and does not mind controlling the process with a dial. The included 64-ounce container and tamper give those jobs a clear reason to choose this machine.
Skip it if cabinet clearance is tight, dishwasher-safe parts are essential, or preset programs are what you want from a premium blender. The 5200's appeal is simpler: a large container, direct speed control, and a familiar manual workflow without extra interface layers.
