AeroPress Original vs HARIO Switch 02: Press a Mug or Release a Steep

Both offer a small paper-filtered manual brew. Choose between a plunger-and-puck routine and a glass cone that can steep before draining.

OUR BUYING TAKE

Choose Original for pressing and puck disposal; choose Switch 02 for valve-controlled immersion and optional pour-over. Check the serving size and vessel before buying.

A quiet afternoon cup presents a different buying problem from filling a breakfast pot. You may want to choose the coffee and its steep time without installing a countertop machine. AeroPress Original and HARIO Switch 02 are two paper-filtered manual alternatives, but they ask for different movements at the end of the brew.

The Original uses a plunger to press coffee into a sturdy receiving vessel. Switch 02 opens a valve and lets coffee drain under gravity. Start with which action you prefer, then check the serving size and cleanup. Neither mechanism establishes a flavor winner, and neither supplies hot water automatically.

Choose the action you want to repeat

With AeroPress, the filter cap attaches to the chamber, which sits upright on a sturdy mug. Add coffee and water, follow the chosen recipe, and press gently. Some early drip-through with the standard cap is normal. The manufacturer's upright instructions describe inserting the plunger to control further dripping before the final press.

That makes the Original appealing if a short, hands-on pressing step feels comfortable. It is less suitable if pushing down on a vessel is the part you want to avoid. Use a sound, supported mug, rather than assuming any thin glass cup shown in a photograph is appropriate.

Switch closes its outlet with a steel ball. Raise the switch to hold water, allow the coffee to steep, then press the trigger to release it. The valve remains open after you lift your finger; reset it before the next brew.

Here the useful benefit is choosing when drainage starts without applying a plunger's downward force. A suitable server or stand must still support the dripper. Switch can also operate with its valve open as a pour-over, so it suits someone who wants both approaches in one cone.

Check your mug against two different capacity figures

AeroPress lists the Original's chamber capacity as 10 ounces. HARIO specifies approximately 200 milliliters of finished coffee for Switch 02. Those figures describe different things: chamber room and finished output. They should not be treated as a laboratory comparison of how much each recipe delivers.

HARIO's starting instructions illustrate 20 grams of coffee and approximately 240 milliliters of water. Grounds retain water, and the closed cone needs room for both. A larger mug's entire water dose does not necessarily fit in one immersion fill.

For either brewer, choose a recipe that fits the hardware and the drink you actually want. Several people wanting full mugs together may mean repeated brews. An appropriately sized batch brewer is a more direct answer to that household problem.

Include the paper supply and the receiving vessel

Both require coffee, hot water, paper replenishment and a separate vessel. Standard AeroPress papers and V60 02 cone papers are different supplies; check which you can replace conveniently. The selected Switch is the dripper version, not the server set.

AeroPress's polypropylene chamber offers a practical reason to consider it for a bag-based setup. That is a materials-based buying judgment, not a drop-test result. You still need a sturdy mug at the destination. The Original is also different from AeroPress Go and XL, which change the package or size.

Switch retains a glass bowl and adds a silicone base and resin trigger. HARIO states that the trigger contacts brewed coffee. Buyers seeking an entirely glass-and-metal coffee path should account for that detail rather than treating the visible glass as the whole assembly.

Decide which cleanup you will keep doing

After pressing, AeroPress lets the plunger push out the spent grounds and paper as a puck. Its care guidance calls for rinsing and occasionally removing the silicone seal for washing. That disposal step is a second concrete buying reason alongside its compact plastic chamber.

Switch's parts are removable for cleaning, but the ball and trigger must be correctly reassembled. The original instructions favor gentle cleaning rather than abrasives. Its valve-based control comes with small parts to keep track of.

Choose Original when you welcome pressing and puck disposal, particularly with a suitable mug already available. Choose Switch 02 when small immersion brews and an open-valve pour-over option matter more. Skip both for unattended brewing or a large shared batch. Taste, effort and cleanup remain personal decisions; the better purchase is the routine you are willing to repeat.

THE CHOICES

Which one fits your job?

01AeroPress Original — Gray, Standard (10 oz), US

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Push the spent coffee and filter out together for disposal.
  • Consider a compact plastic chamber for a bag-based coffee setup.
THE LIMITS
  • Needs gentle manual pressing over a sturdy supported vessel.
  • 10-ounce chamber and separate hot-water supply do not replace a large automatic batch brewer.

02HARIO SSD-200-B — Size02 clear,40filters,not03notserverset

WHY CONSIDER IT
  • Release a steep by operating the valve rather than pressing a plunger.
  • Use the same cone with the valve open for pour-over.
THE LIMITS
  • Limited closed-cone room and a separate receiving vessel need planning.
  • Valve parts require cleaning and correct reassembly; control of drainage does not prove better flavor.
