With a conventional pour-over cone, water begins draining while you pour. HARIO’s Switch adds a valve beneath a glass V60-style cone, allowing the coffee to steep before you release it. The point is control over when drainage begins, rather than an automatic promise of better coffee.
The Size 02 Switch, model SSD-200-B, suits a small manual brew when you want to separate steeping from drawdown. It can also work as a standard pour-over. Before buying, check the finished volume, the paper filters and the parts that need cleaning; this is a brewer, not a complete coffee station.
The switch changes when the coffee drains
A stainless-steel ball closes the outlet, operated by the switch on the silicone base. With the switch raised, the brewer holds water for immersion. Press it down to release the coffee through the paper filter. HARIO’s instructions say it remains open after you remove your finger.
This gives you a clear pause between adding water and starting drawdown. You can keep track of the steep rather than having to make the whole brew depend on a continuous pouring pattern. The valve also needs resetting before the next brew; otherwise the water will drain when you expect it to stay.
The useful reason to buy is that choice of workflow. Beans, grind, water and your recipe still matter. A controlled release is not evidence that every cup will taste better or that you can ignore how the coffee is prepared.
Size 02 describes a modest immersion batch
HARIO gives this model a finished capacity of approximately 200ml. Its original instructions illustrate 20g of coffee with about 240ml of hot water and roughly two minutes of steeping. That is a manufacturer starting method, not a requirement to use the same recipe for every coffee.
The important distinction is between water added and the finished drink. Coffee grounds retain some water, and a closed cone needs room for both grounds and liquid. Do not read “02” as a guarantee that it can hold an arbitrarily large mug’s entire water dose at once.
Choose this size for a small brew and check your preferred recipe against its practical room. If your usual immersion batch is substantially larger, consider the appropriate larger brewer rather than planning to fill this cone beyond a sensible level. The model name alone does not answer a volume question.
Filters and the receiving vessel complete the setup
The selected dripper listing includes 40 Size 02 V60 paper filters. It is the dripper version, rather than the separate server set. A serving vessel, kettle, coffee and any weighing equipment you want to use are additional parts of your routine.
HARIO specifies V60 paper filter 02 for this model. Having the first pack included makes starting straightforward, but replacement papers remain a recurring purchase. Check what filters you can obtain conveniently before making this your everyday brewer.
Set the dripper on a suitable server or stand before adding hot water, as the instructions direct. Press the switch gently; forcing it can disturb the supported brewer. The ability to hold water should not be treated as a reason to carry a filled, hot dripper around the kitchen.
A suitable receiving vessel supports the dripper; the illustrated glass server is not included in the selected dripper version.Image sourceEditorial image reference.Display copy resized and compressed. Original image.
Cleaning includes the valve, not just the glass
The bowl is heatproof glass, but the complete brewer also uses a silicone base, a PCT-resin switch and the steel ball. HARIO’s US page notes that the plastic trigger contacts brewed coffee. Buyers seeking an entirely glass-and-metal coffee path should account for that detail.
The parts can be removed for cleaning. The instructions recommend a soft sponge and neutral detergent, permit dishwasher cleaning with appropriate dishwasher instructions, and warn against abrasive cleaners. During reassembly, the bowl needs seating correctly and the ball must remain in place for the valve to hold water.
Buy the Switch 02 when a small steep-then-drain routine appeals to you and you are comfortable with papers and a removable valve assembly. Skip it if you need a large single immersion batch, a fully automatic machine or an all-glass-and-metal brew path. Its strongest benefit is a deliberate choice between two manual brewing approaches.
