When power drops, a desktop UPS has one immediate job: keep the right devices available long enough for you to act. The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000MS is a 120 V tower rated at 1000 VA and 600 W. Those figures are a starting point. The more useful shopping exercise is to sketch the equipment, outlets, and actions your desk actually needs.
Think about the first minute of a power interruption. A desktop user may need to save a file and shut down. Someone working from a laptop might instead want the modem and router to stay on briefly while the laptop runs from its own battery. Both uses can make sense, but they lead to different outlet assignments and load estimates.
List the equipment needed for your chosen task. A desktop without its display may leave you unable to see the save dialog. A router without the modem or fiber terminal it relies on may keep a local wireless network visible without preserving internet access. Follow the full chain before counting plugs. Even a complete local setup cannot ensure the provider's upstream network stays available.
The BR1000MS provides ten AC outlets. The rear markings distinguish outlets that have battery backup and surge protection from those that offer surge protection only. Use the labels on the actual unit and its documentation when assigning equipment. The manufacturer image is useful because it shows the groups across both columns of the rear panel.
Draw each plug on your map and include its power adapter. Wide adapters can limit access to neighboring sockets, so a count that works on paper might need rearranging. Label important cords at the device end as well as near the tower. That makes it easier to recheck your assignments after moving a monitor, replacing a router, or cleaning behind the desk.

The 600 W rating is an output limit, not a runtime estimate. Check your equipment documentation and the UPS manufacturer's load and runtime information. If you have a suitable way to observe the normal draw, include a representative demanding workload rather than relying only on an idle reading. For a computer, the power supply's label alone does not tell you what the entire setup typically draws.
Leave room for changes in load and avoid planning around the maximum rating. If the expected runtime for the devices you need does not cover your shutdown steps, reconsider what belongs on the battery outlets or choose a different setup. The number shown on a product image is a display example. Battery condition and connected load affect the time available in use.
Set the tower where you can see its LCD and reach the outlets while keeping the ventilation clear according to the manual. The display can help you see the state of the unit without crawling behind the desk. This model also lists a user-replaceable battery. Confirm the compatible replacement part and procedure before treating that as a maintenance advantage.
Write down the order you would use to close applications and shut down. If you intend to rely on unattended shutdown, verify the relevant software support and configuration on your own computer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setup and testing, and practice the normal shutdown sequence before you need it.
Choose the BR1000MS when the documented load and runtime match a defined short-term task and the backed outlets fit the required plugs. If you need to stay productive through a long outage, calculate that requirement separately. A simple outlet map and a shutdown plan you can actually follow are more useful than buying a tower by its VA number alone.
