Article summary

A portable reference screen can help on the road, but the MB16ACV's USB connection, driver requirements and desk setup deserve a rehearsal before departure.

A second screen is useful when it saves you from repeatedly hiding the document you need to consult. The ASUS ZenScreen MB16ACV is a 15.6-inch portable display aimed at that kind of extra workspace. Before adding it to your travel bag, check the laptop connection and decide which task will live on it.

Rehearse the connection on your own laptop

The MB16ACV uses a USB-C hybrid connection for video and power. ASUS also supports a USB Type-A connection through a DisplayLink driver. These are different setup paths, so the connector's shape alone should not be your compatibility test.

Check the laptop's documentation and ASUS support information for the intended connection. For a direct USB-C display connection, confirm the port's display-output capability. For the Type-A route, verify operating-system support and whether you are allowed to install the required driver. A managed work laptop may have restrictions that matter more than the monitor's advertised flexibility.

Connect the exact cable and laptop you will carry before leaving home. Extend the desktop, open the applications you need and reconnect after putting the computer to sleep. This is a practical rehearsal, not a guarantee that every dock or adapter will behave identically.

Give the portable screen one clear role

The panel has a 1920-by-1080 resolution and a maximum 60 Hz refresh rate. Think about a reference document beside your editor, meeting notes beside a call, or a spreadsheet beside its source material. Choose the pairing you actually use instead of filling both screens simply because you can.

Set the operating system's display arrangement to match the monitor's physical position. Adjust text scaling so you can read comfortably from your normal working distance. If the pointer repeatedly disappears at the wrong edge, fix the layout before judging whether the extra screen helps.

Keep notifications away from anything you might share in a meeting. A separate screen is not an automatic privacy boundary: check which display or application the conferencing software is sharing. Save the preferred arrangement only after a short test with your ordinary work.

Budget space for the support, not just the panel

A fold-out kickstand supports the monitor on a flat surface. Its rear quarter-inch threaded mounting point also allows a compatible tripod or table mount; ASUS states that the tripod is sold separately. The product image showing front and rear views is not a two-monitor bundle.

Before packing, estimate the usable depth of your likely workspace. A laptop, the monitor's support and the cable all need room. Put the screen where it is stable and readable without stretching the cable across the keyboard or an aisle.

ASUS lists the monitor at 0.9 kg. Add the cable, protective sleeve and any separate mount when judging the total travel load. A portable screen that regularly stays in the bag because it makes the trip cumbersome is not solving the original problem.

Treat orientation and software as separate choices

The MB16ACV can be used in landscape or portrait orientation. ASUS offers automatic orientation through its DisplayWidget software, but its documentation limits the Auto Rotate function to Windows and notes a driver requirement. Do not assume that rotating the hardware will automatically rotate the picture on every computer.

Try portrait mode with the actual documents you read. A longer page can be convenient, but the narrower layout may change how a website or application behaves. If it creates more resizing than useful reading space, return to landscape.

Buy this model when the tested connection, extra workspace and packed weight fit your routine. Reconsider it if you need a much larger desktop canvas, an installation-free Type-A setup or a screen whose appeal depends on unverified device compatibility. A successful trial with your own laptop is more useful than a broad compatibility headline.
