Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: Match the Cable to the Listening Setup
THE BUYING TAKE
Choose the standard ATH-M50x around your source output, physical fit and cable route. Confirm the exact box contents instead of borrowing features from wireless versions or bundles.
Best for
Listeners who want wired headphones with several supplied cable lengths for a known desk, interface or portable-source arrangement.
The trade-off
Cable length and source sockets still need planning. Closed-back construction and professional branding do not guarantee a particular fit, isolation level or recording result.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x
Standard Black / wired / three-cable retail package
A headphone cable that comfortably reaches a desk interface can become an untidy loop beside a laptop. A short cable that suits a bag can become restrictive when the source sits farther away. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x addresses those different arrangements with three detachable cables, making the connection plan a useful starting point for this wired headphone.
This assessment covers the standard black ATH-M50x. It is not the ATH-M50xBT2 wireless model or a retailer bundle with an added stand, cleaning kit or case. Compare the exact package before treating every accessory photograph as a list of what the standard box contains.
Choose the cable for the route
Audio-Technica includes a 1.2 meter straight cable, a 3 meter straight cable and a coiled cable specified from 1.2 to 3 meters. Choose the one that reaches your source with room for ordinary movement, rather than using the longest cable simply because it is available.
At a laptop, the shorter straight cable may leave less loose cable around the keyboard and chair. At a more distant interface, the longer option may fit the route better. A coiled cable is another arrangement to evaluate; its listed extension is not a reason to keep it stretched across a walkway.
Plan where the cable will run when you stand up, turn the chair or reach for equipment. The manufacturer's manual advises holding the plug when connecting or disconnecting, rather than pulling on the cable itself. A detachable connection is a convenience to use carefully, not an invitation to remove it by force.

Check the source connection
The headphone cables connect to a 3.5 mm stereo output, and the standard accessories include a 6.3 mm screw-on adapter. Check the actual output socket on the laptop, interface, mixer or other source you intend to use.
If the source only offers another connection type, identify the appropriate audio arrangement before buying. A plug adapter changes a physical connection; it does not automatically add a microphone, a wireless link or every function a different headset provides.
Audio-Technica specifies 38 ohms of impedance. That number is a product specification, not a complete prediction of listening level on every device. Start with the source volume reduced, connect the headphones and establish a comfortable level. This assessment does not claim that every portable output performs identically or that an amplifier is universally required.
Separate monitoring from soundproofing
The ATH-M50x is a closed-back dynamic design with 45 mm drivers. Audio-Technica describes an over-ear arrangement intended to provide sound isolation. Those features help define the product, but they are not a measurement of how much room noise your particular fit will block.
Try the fit with the glasses, hairstyle and working posture you normally use. Check whether the ear cushions sit as intended and whether the headband adjustment feels suitable over a realistic session. Comfort cannot be established from the driver size or the word professional in the product description.
For recording work, listen to the actual signal path you need to monitor and check the levels in the recording program. Headphones can help you hear a problem, but owning a monitor model does not prove that the recording itself is balanced, free from noise or ready for delivery.
Pack the headphones without abusing the cable
The earcups swivel 90 degrees, and the design folds for transport. The included protective pouch is useful for organizing the headphones, but it should not be treated as a rigid case that protects against every load inside a crowded bag.
Disconnect and arrange the cable with care, keeping it away from parts that can snag or crush it. The manual also warns against wrapping the cable tightly around a portable audio device. Plan storage for the adapter and the cable you actually need, rather than carrying every supplied part by default.
Choose the ATH-M50x when a wired connection, its documented fit features and the included cable choices suit your listening or monitoring routine. Compare another design if your main need is wireless operation or a different connection workflow. No original sound-quality, isolation or long-session comfort test is claimed here.
