BESSEY VAS-23 Strap Clamp: Follow the Corners of a Glue-Up

THE BUYING TAKE

A useful choice for perimeter glue-ups when four pivoting clips, two-sided strap take-up and an integrated reel match the work. Check the full strap route and corner count first.

Best for
Frame and box makers who need a flexible loop around an assembly and will check joint alignment during tightening.
The trade-off
The 23-foot range follows the wraparound route, four clips are included, and pressure acts around the perimeter. The clamp cannot correct poorly fitting joints or verify squareness.

Article summary

Four pivoting corner clips and a strap that tightens from both ends suit perimeter glue-ups. Check the route around your project and how many corners need support before choosing this single-clamp package.

A picture frame can have all four pieces cut and still be awkward to hold together while you check the joints. Pressure has to follow the assembly around its outside. The BESSEY VAS-23+2K-CB offers that wraparound approach, using a flexible strap and movable corner clips instead of a fixed rectangular frame.

Its strongest case is a project whose corners need to be gathered into one clamping arrangement: a frame, a box or an angled assembly. The choice starts with the path the strap will take. Enough strap length is necessary, but the corners, the clamp body and your access to the joints matter too.

Trace the whole route around the project

BESSEY specifies a woven polyester strap with a clamping range up to 23 feet. That is the available wraparound range, not a promise that the tool spans a 23-foot-wide workpiece. Think around the perimeter, allowing for the actual route past the corner pieces and tightening mechanism.

For a rectangular frame, lay out the pieces and consider where the clamp body will sit before adding glue. Can the strap run at the height you need? Can you still see and adjust each joint? A simple dry assembly answers more useful questions than the longest dimension alone.

This also separates a strap clamp from an across-the-boards clamping setup. If your work needs pressure in another direction, a loop around its outside may not supply it. Choose the arrangement that matches the joint, rather than trying to make the longest strap solve every glue-up.

Let the clips meet the corner angles

The package includes four pivoting Vario corner clips. Each has tilting contact pads; BESSEY lists their angle range as 60 to 180 degrees. Those moving contact points adapt to an assembly's outline, including projects whose corners are not all right angles.

Count the corners that need those supports before buying. Four included clips are a clear starting point for a four-corner frame, but a more elaborate outline needs its own plan. BESSEY lists additional Vario clips separately, so do not assume a multi-angle project comes with every clip it might require.

The angle range describes the clip's adjustment, not a guarantee that a joint is accurately cut. Bring the mating surfaces into alignment and check the intended shape yourself. Tilting pads let the contact follow an angle; they do not establish that angle for you.

Take up slack, then apply the final tension

The official FAQ separates setup into two controls. First release strap tension by turning the central handle counterclockwise and draw out the required length. Position the corner heads, then use the small winding crank to gather slack. Turn the large BESSEY handle clockwise for final tightening.

BESSEY says this mechanism draws the strap from both ends to distribute pressure around the corners. You are tightening the surrounding loop through one mechanism rather than separately adjusting a clamp at every corner.

Still watch the joints as tension develops. An even-pull design cannot substitute for checking the assembly's shape, flushness and fit. Rehearsing the sequence without glue also helps you find a handle position you can reach without shifting the work at the wrong moment.

Account for the spare strap and the package

The integrated reel collects unused strap, so a small frame need not leave the entire loose length spread across the bench. That is useful when the tool will move between projects of different sizes. The reel stays with the clamp, so gathering the excess is part of setup rather than a separate storage job.

The selected product is one clamp with four corner clips. BESSEY identifies the current VAS-23+2K-CB as the older VAS-23+2K supplied in newer PVC-free packaging. The suffix is not evidence of extra clamps or a stronger mechanism.

Choose it when a perimeter loop, adjustable corner contact and collected spare strap suit recurring frame or box work. If your project needs a different pressure direction or more supported corners, settle that clamping plan before ordering.
