Brother HL-L2460DW Laser Printer: Budget for Pages, Not Just the Box

THE BUYING TAKE

Choose for a defined monochrome workload and verified connection route, after checking real replacement-supply costs. Compare multifunction or color models when those functions are essential.

Best for
Home-office document printing where black-and-white output, duplex settings and future supplies are planned.
The trade-off
Print-only and monochrome. The 36ppm claim is single-sided; starter toner differs from replacements, and the drum is a separate consumable.

The printer's purchase price is only the first line in a home-office printing budget. Paper use, replacement toner, a separate drum and the way computers connect will matter after the first box is empty. The Brother HL-L2460DW is worth considering when most of your work is black-and-white documents and you can plan those ongoing needs.

This assessment covers the standard US HL-L2460DW, not the XL toner package, a refurbished unit or a multifunction printer. It is a monochrome, print-only laser model. If scanning originals, making standalone copies or producing color pages is essential, those requirements belong in the comparison before print speed.

Start with your normal document pile

Count a representative month of pages and note how often you print on both sides. Brother provides automatic duplex printing and a 250-sheet standard tray, with the maximum tray capacity based on 20-pound paper. A separate manual slot handles one sheet at a time.

The advertised rate of up to 36 pages per minute is a single-sided figure, requiring a change from the default setting. Do not use it as a promise that every double-sided document, graphics-heavy file or first page after a pause will appear at that rate.

Brother lists Letter and Legal for automatic duplex on its current US page. Check the required paper size and media guidance for the actual job, especially envelopes or labels. A paper that fits a tray is not automatically suitable for every feed route or two-sided setting.

Separate starter toner from replacements

The standard box includes a starter black toner cartridge rated at approximately 700 pages and a DR830 drum unit. Replacement TN830 and TN830XL cartridges are listed at approximately 1,200 and 3,000 pages respectively. The starter supply is not the same quantity as either replacement.

Brother bases toner yield on ISO/IEC 19752 testing for Letter/A4. Treat those figures as comparison references rather than a guarantee for a particular stack of documents. Keep the original model and supply number together when checking replacement prices.

The drum is a separate consumable, with an approximate 15,000-page reference under Brother's stated one-page-per-job, single-sided conditions. Toner running low does not by itself mean a new drum is required. Include both categories in a longer-term estimate rather than treating the printer as a single-cartridge system.

For a useful comparison, price the actual compatible supplies from a seller you intend to use and apply a realistic page estimate. This article does not provide a measured cost per page or invent a toner price. Optional subscription offers need their own enrollment terms checked separately.

Choose the connection before the location

The HL-L2460DW offers dual-band wireless, Ethernet and a local USB 2.0 connection. Decide which route suits the working space before choosing a shelf: network access, a nearby computer and a convenient cable path are different requirements.

Brother's setup guide says wired users must purchase the correct interface cable. Check what your equipment requires rather than assuming the power cord is a USB or Ethernet cable. Confirm the current support instructions for the operating systems and devices you actually use.

The manufacturer specifically says macOS printing uses AirPrint and that Mac printer drivers are not supplied. Mobile printing also has network, software and device-compatibility conditions. A broad wireless label is not a promise that every application or connection arrangement behaves identically.

Leave room for the daily routine

Brother lists the printer at 14.0 inches wide, 14.2 inches deep and 7.2 inches high. Those dimensions describe the unit, not the entire working space. Allow practical access for loading paper, collecting pages and following the documented consumable-replacement procedure.

Start with a short representative document and inspect both sides before sending a large job. Check orientation, margins and legibility at the settings you intend to keep. That small check helps prevent a convenient duplex feature from turning into a pile of avoidable reprints.

Choose the HL-L2460DW for a defined monochrome printing workload with understood supplies and connections. Its value rests on that fit, rather than an untested promise of permanent reliability or free ongoing printing. This assessment is based on specifications and setup documentation, not an original speed or endurance test.
