Check supported rolls, proof a template and choose USB or wired Ethernet for the 550 Turbo.
Small-label batches from a known set of compatible workstations.
THE BUYING TAKE

A label template starts with a physical choice. An address label needs a predictable size so the same layout can be used across envelopes. A shelf or folder label may need a little more room when names vary. The Brother QL-800 handles both with compatible Brother DK rolls. Choose the stock first and design around its usable width. That simple step keeps you from spending time on a template that clips a line or wastes tape on every cut.
Use a die-cut roll when the label's physical size should stay the same. Start with a single address or a short folder name, then put the longest example in the same template. Leave some margin at the sides and make sure the smallest text is readable at arm's length. A clean preview can hide a bad line break, so check the first real print with the intended envelope, folder tab or storage bin in front of you.
Continuous tape works when labels share a width but need different lengths. It lets the automatic cutter finish the label after the text rather than forcing every label into the same rectangle. Set a sensible minimum length for handling, then test a short name and a long name before printing the entire batch. Brother specifies stock up to 62 mm wide, with a narrower printable area. Compare your design with the printer's supported media and margins before ordering replacement rolls. A wide shipping template designed around four-inch labels calls for a wider printer.
The QL-800 is a direct thermal printer. Its print head works with compatible media, so the supplies to plan around are rolls instead of ink cartridges. Brother supports black-and-red output with DK-2251 tape. If you want a red heading or handling instruction, verify that the selected template and roll support two colors before laying out a whole set. A standard black-only roll is sufficient for most names and addresses.
Use red sparingly. One short line marked for review will stand out more clearly if the address, date or contents stay in black. Run a small proof with the exact roll you intend to use. Brother's headline speed of up to 93 labels per minute applies to standard address labels printed in black at 300 dpi under its conditions. A two-color run, a different layout and the time needed to load and organize rolls will change the pace. Base your own estimate on a short representative run.
The standard QL-800 in this guide connects to a computer by USB. Place it where you can reach the lid and output slot, with enough cable slack to change rolls without pulling on the computer. If people must print from several desks or send labels from a phone, confirm the required connectivity before buying. Brother's wireless models have different interfaces. The physical resemblance within the family is easy to miss on a product listing.
Check Brother's support page for the printer driver and the appropriate version of P-touch Editor for your system. Test the actual application workflow if your labels start in a spreadsheet or another tool. Make a small sample with a short name, a long name and an address that needs an extra line. If your computer is managed by an employer, check whether you can install the required software before promising a print run.

Put a sample on the intended surface and see whether it remains legible and stays attached under normal handling. A file folder and a bin that gets wiped down have different needs. Choose the roll based on the intended surface and exposure and consult the stock specifications before making assumptions about water, heat or sunlight. Keep a note of the roll code beside the saved template so a refill does not change the layout unexpectedly.
The QL-800 is a good candidate for a fixed USB station producing narrow addresses, filing labels and occasional black-and-red notices. Estimate how often you will switch rolls and whether someone will need to print away from that desk. Those two checks tell you more about everyday fit than the headline speed alone.
