Clover 7811 Hot Ruler: Measure and Press the Same Fold

THE BUYING TAKE

A practical way to carry a marked hem width directly into pressing, with the 10-inch length and diagonal guide adding options for deeper folds and corners.

Best for
Home sewists making long straight hems, deeper turn-ups or mitered fabric corners who want a measuring guide that can remain beneath the fold during pressing.
The trade-off
The rectangular 7811 lacks the Hot Hemmer's rounded-corner format. Let it cool before handling, avoid prolonged hot-iron contact and follow the fabric's own heat limits.

With Clover's 7811 Hot Ruler, the measuring guide can stay inside a fold while you press it. Bring the fabric edge to a marked width, then apply the iron without pulling the ruler away. The line you measured against is still there as you set the crease.

Press against the line you just measured

The ruler is 2.5 inches wide and 10 inches long. Its nylon fiberboard is made for pressing with a dry or steam iron. For a long straight hem, the 10-inch edge gives you a run of fabric to align before moving along to the next section. For several pillowcases made to the same allowance, the visible scale also gives you a reference to return to on each piece.

Clover describes the surface as non-slip, helping the fabric stay in position while you arrange the fold. It does not secure the entire garment. Keep the rest of the fabric supported while you line up the section being pressed.

The designer uses heavier markings for whole inches and lighter ones for half inches, with smaller guides around the ruler. Read the printed number for the line you intend to use, especially when turning the tool to work from another edge.

For curtains, work from one measured section to the next, checking that the fabric edge still reaches the chosen line. On a pillowcase, make that check along the edge before sewing. The ruler sets the crease; the seam allowance still comes from your pattern and the fabric you have cut.

Turn it for deeper hems and mitered corners

A deep hem uses the ruler differently. In Clover's demonstration, you measure up from the raw edge and mark the intended depth at several points. Then place the ruler along those marks, fold the fabric over its edge and press.

The short edge gives a zero point for measuring along the 10-inch length. That makes the longer dimension useful even when the finished turn-up is deeper than the ruler's 2.5-inch width. Turn the ruler to make those depth marks, then reposition its long edge for pressing.

For a mitered corner, the diagonal guide provides another reference. Align the ruler with the folded corner and compare the miter line with the fabric edge before pressing. This gives you a marked angle to check while handling the fabric instead of estimating by eye alone.

These functions let the same tool help position the fabric and remain there for pressing. Match the allowance and corner construction to your sewing instructions; a printed guide cannot correct a misplaced fold.

Give the heat rating a practical boundary

Clover lists heat resistance up to 428°F, or 220°C. That limit applies to the ruler, not to every fabric you might put over it. Use the iron setting appropriate for your material and follow the fabric's care instructions.

The current product directions also say to let the ruler cool before handling it. Do not leave the hot iron resting on it for an extended period, which Clover says can cause discoloration. The company also warns against twisting, bending or folding the ruler because that may deform it.

Shape matters as much as length. This is the narrow, rectangular 7811 Hot Ruler. Clover's separate 6-by-5-inch 7806 Hot Hemmer has a rounded corner and a corner cutout for other pressing and measuring tasks. Those features are not part of the 7811; consider which edges and corners your projects need.

The selected package contains one ruler, without an iron or fabric. Its strongest role is beside a project with repeated straight folds, deeper hem allowances or mitered corners. Those tasks put both the marked surface and the heat-resistant construction to work, so measuring and pressing can stay together.
