Dremel 225-02 Flex Shaft: Put a Smaller Handpiece at the Work
THE BUYING TAKE
Consider the 225-02 for recurring detail work with a compatible host and room for proper cable routing; it is an attachment, not a complete powered tool.
Best for
Compatible Dremel rotary-tool owners who want a smaller handpiece for repeated detail work.
The trade-off
Host compatibility, collet/bit fit and cable routing matter. Host tool is separate; router and large-diameter bits are excluded by the manual.

Some rotary-tool projects ask you to guide a small accessory close to a detail while holding the entire motorized tool. Dremel's 225-02 Flex Shaft changes that arrangement: a flexible cable connects a compatible rotary tool to a separate, smaller handpiece. The motor remains part of the setup, but it no longer has to occupy the same space as your guiding hand.
That is a practical reason to consider an attachment when engraving or other detail work becomes a recurring task. It is also a reason to pause if you expected a self-contained powered tool. The 225-02 needs a compatible host and an appropriately arranged workspace; the handpiece does not have its own motor.
Separate the handpiece from the host tool
The first buying reason is the smaller working end. It changes what you hold while guiding an accessory near the work, rather than promising more motor power. Dremel identifies engraving, etching, sanding and carving among the intended applications. Whether this arrangement helps your particular project depends on the bit, material and setup.
The current product page specifies a 36-inch flexible cable. An older linked instruction sheet describes the complete assembly as 42 inches long; those are differently described measurements. Use the current cable specification when planning a layout, and do not treat every inch of the assembly as freely usable reach.
The original application diagram shows the handpiece beside a workpiece and a separate rotary tool. It illustrates the intended arrangement, rather than documenting results achieved by this publication. The host tool visible in a supplier photograph is not evidence that a powered rotary tool comes with the attachment.
Make room for the cable as well as the detail
The second buying reason is the cable-mediated reach between the host and the handpiece. It can support a layout where the motor sits apart from the immediate detail area. That is useful to investigate when the full tool body interferes with the position you want for fine work.
A flexible cable still needs space. Dremel's instruction sheet warns against sharp or multiple bends and specifies a minimum recommended bend radius of six inches. A cluttered surface that forces a tight loop is therefore a poor match for treating this as a simple space-saving accessory.
Plan the host position and workholding before purchasing. Follow the instructions supplied for the actual host and attachment, including motor positioning; this article is a buying assessment rather than a replacement installation procedure. A smaller handpiece should not be mistaken for a way to ignore accessory or operating restrictions.

Verify the tool and the accessories together
Model compatibility is a real limit. The current Dremel page lists compatible hosts including the 4300, 4000 and 3000, alongside other specified models. Check the complete current list and your exact model rather than assuming every product bearing the Dremel name fits.
Dremel's shop page states that the attachment accepts accessory shanks up to 1/8 inch. The manual also requires a collet matching the chosen shank size. That diameter limit alone is not permission to use any bit: the linked instructions exclude router bits and other large-diameter bits of one inch or larger.
If your projects call mainly for occasional straightforward work that is comfortable with the existing tool, the additional cable and setup may offer little value. If a stand, different collet or other setup item is needed for your arrangement, consider that alongside the attachment price rather than assuming those items are included.
Judge the complete setup before ordering
On October 10, 2026, Home Depot displayed $35.97 for model 225-02. A new-credit-card promotion on the same page is a separate conditional offer, not the ordinary product price. The Amazon listing's mixed new-and-used headline was not used as a verified new-item price.
This attachment makes the clearest sense for an owner of a compatible rotary tool who repeatedly wants a smaller working handpiece and can accommodate the cable correctly. Buy for that changed working arrangement, with the host and accessories checked. If either compatibility or workspace fit remains uncertain, resolve it before adding another tool component.
