Elgato 4K S: Keep Gameplay and Recording Settings Separate
THE BUYING TAKE
A useful external capture option when you want a dedicated play screen and deliberate control over the recording format.
Best for
Console creators who record or stream through a supported computer and can plan HDMI, USB and audio connections.
The trade-off
Passthrough and capture capabilities differ. HDR capture is limited, and the computer, codec and audio routing must match the intended workflow.

Elgato Game Capture 4K S 10GBR9901
Black / external USB capture card with USB-C and HDMI cables
You may want a sharp picture on your gaming display without producing the largest possible recording every time. Elgato 4K S makes that distinction worth understanding before you buy: the video sent through HDMI to a display and the video captured over USB are related, but they are not the same output.
This guide covers the black 10GBR9901 external capture card, not the older, similarly named 4K60 S+. It draws on Elgato's product documentation and current format table rather than an original capture test. Its strongest use case is bringing an external HDMI source into a computer-based recording or streaming workflow while keeping a separate display for play.
Give each connection a clear job
Elgato's quick-start guide describes three connections: the source goes to HDMI IN, HDMI OUT feeds the display, and USB connects the card to the computer. Draw that route for your own equipment before ordering. It helps distinguish a missing video cable from a software configuration problem.
The package includes a 1.5-meter USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a 1.5-meter HDMI cable. Count the entire installation's cable needs, including the connection already serving your console or display. Do not assume that one included HDMI cable supplies every segment of the chain.
For recording, Elgato provides its Studio software; its setup guide also points to applications such as OBS for streaming. The capture card supplies a source to that workflow. It does not decide your scene layout, commentary balance or broadcast destination for you. Plan a short local test recording before arranging a live stream.

Separate the picture you play from the file you save
The current detailed format table lists 3840 × 2160 capture at up to 60 frames per second in SDR. It also documents downscaling: a 4K source can remain 4K on the passthrough display while the recording software requests a lower capture resolution.
That separation is a concrete reason to consider this device. You can choose a recording format around the destination and editing workflow rather than treating the television's setting as an instruction to maximize every saved file. Decide first whether you need a long session archive, a short edited clip or a live broadcast.
HDR needs a separate check. Elgato's detailed table limits HDR10 capture to OBS Studio at up to 1080p60 on Windows, while HDR passthrough can reach 4K60. A picture appearing in HDR on the television therefore does not prove that the saved recording has the same resolution and dynamic range.
Use the detailed codec table for your intended format rather than combining headline maximums. The available capture combinations depend on the codec and USB connection. A higher number in one row is not a promise that every setting can be enabled together.
Check the recording computer, not only the console
The manufacturer specifies a USB 3.0 Type-C connection for the usual recording setup. A connector's shape alone does not establish the available data connection, so check the computer's port documentation and use the supplied cable where appropriate.
Elgato also publishes operating-system and processor requirements, and explicitly notes that other recording applications can have different requirements. Verify the software you plan to run on your actual machine, particularly if it is an older laptop. Compatibility with the HDMI source is only one part of the purchase.
Storage and testing deserve a place in the plan too. Make a sample recording with the chosen settings, play it back, and check image quality, sound and synchronization before a longer session. This is a practical workflow recommendation, not a measured performance claim about your computer.
Treat audio and content compatibility as separate checks
The 3.5 mm port is documented as a stereo line input. That description should not be read as a promise that every microphone or console chat arrangement connects directly. Work out the source of commentary and game audio before choosing cables or additional equipment.
The HDMI input accepts unencrypted signals. Protected video sources are outside that documented capability; do not buy it on the assumption that any picture shown by any HDMI device can be recorded.
4K S is compelling when you need an external HDMI capture path with a dedicated gaming display and independently chosen recording settings. Its value comes from that arrangement. Computer capability, supported formats, audio routing and a successful test recording still determine whether it fits your particular setup.
